The Grasshopper Syndrome

Numbers 13:1
1 And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 2 "Send men to spy out the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the children of Israel; from each tribe of their fathers you shall send a man, every one a leader among them."
3 So Moses sent them from the Wilderness of Paran according to the command of the LORD, all of them men who were heads of the children of Israel.

Verses 17- 20
17 Then Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said to them, "Go up this way into the South, and go up to the mountains, 18 "and see what the land is like: whether the people who dwell in it are strong or weak, few or many; 19 "whether the land they dwell in is good or bad; whether the cities they inhabit are like camps or strongholds; 20 "whether the land is rich or poor; and whether there are forests there or not. Be of good courage. And bring some of the fruit of the land." Now the time was the season of the first ripe grapes.

Verses 30- 33
30 Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses, and said, "Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it." 31 But the men who had gone up with him said, "We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we." 32 And they gave the children of Israel a bad report of the land which they had spied out, saying, "The land through which we have gone as spies is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people whom we saw in it are men of great stature. 33 "There we saw the giants (the descendants of Anak came from the giants); and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight."

People who have a promise don’t always look like it or act like it.

You cannot judge someone by where you found them.

We all have promises spoken over us.

7 prophetic statements for 1st generation Christians.

1. You will be protected and safe all the days of your life.

Psalm 91 says that God is your refuge and your fortress. It says that angels guard us night and day.

2. No weapon formed against you will prosper.

Isaiah 54:17 says no weapon formed against you or your children will prosper.

That includes sickness, disease, physical harm, rejection or any other plot of the enemy.

3. You will not walk in fear.

Psalm 23 says Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil;

Because God Himself is with us, right beside us, protecting and caring for us until we come out the other side.

4. Every time you get in trouble you will run to the Lord.

Proverbs 18:10 says that the Name of the Lord is a strong tower, the righteous run into it and we are safe.

5. You will be a man or woman of great spiritual power!

Luke 10:19 says “Behold I give you power to tread on serpents and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

6.You and your family will serve the lord all the days of your life.

Joshua 24:15
"And if it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD."

7. You are blessed to be a blessing.

Genesis 12:2
I will make you a great nation;
I will bless you
And make your name great;
And you shall be a blessing.

You have a promise.
I have a promise.
We have a promise.

The children of Israel had a promise of a land that was flowing with milk and honey.

But they stuck in bondage and were making bricks for Pharaoh.

Sometimes you have to go through some things in order for your promise to manifest.

The thing about bondage is you can be in a bad situation so long that you begin to believe things can never change.

When you live in bondage for so long, it’s not as much about what happens to you physically, it’s about what happens to you psychologically and emotionally.

You will develop a grasshopper syndrome.

The children of Israel had developed a grasshopper syndrome.

They knew they had a promise but they couldn’t embrace it because of their grasshopper mentality.

God didn’t just want to bring them out of bondage but he wanted to establish them as His chosen people.

God opens up the Dead Sea so they can cross on dry.

Pillars of fire at night clouds by day, water out of a rock manna from heaven.

Amazing things!

God wanted them to know that the God who gave them the promise was able to deliver to the promise.
But the grasshopper syndrome is deep.

God brings them to the edge of the fulfillment of their promise and He says give me some fathers.
Give me some men.
Give me some leaders.

They refused to go in because of the grasshopper syndrome.

The opinion of our men becomes the inheritance of our children.

How you see things matters.

The leaders male or female will determine what the children believe.

The grasshopper complex gets so interwoven into a person in psychology that no matter what God does they can’t see themselves the way God see them.

Proverbs 23:7
For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.

We have to destroy the grasshopper syndrome.

We have to drive out insecurities, guilt and shame.

We have to destroy the grasshopper syndrome.

The grasshopper syndrome sees the giants and says we are not able.

Caleb and Joshua see the same giants and say we are able.

Caleb stilled the others and said let’s do it now.

We are able.

The difference between a grasshopper syndrome and a land possessor is what you put in front of able.

Here’s a few things a grasshopper syndrome does to you.

1. A grasshopper syndrome deprives you of Vision.

Proverbs 29:18 Where there is no vision, the people perish:

2. A grasshopper syndrome will keep you from believing in leadership.

A part of the grasshopper syndrome is to make you think the people that are for you are against you and the people that are against you are for you.

3. A grasshopper mentality destroys a sense of community.

We become tribal and pull away from each other.

A grasshopper mentality believes everybody is against us.

4. A grasshopper mentality is motivated by anger and fear.

It is a negative spirit.

It’s becomes easy to stir up anger and hard to stir up your love.

It’s easy to stir up your fear and hard to stir up your forgiveness.

You become spiteful and have a hard time operating in grace.

A spirit of anger and fear moves away from people instead of moving towards people.

5. A grasshopper complex promotes the misuse of resources.

Your integrity and your character are way more important than your stuff.

We are raising up a group of young people who are crazy in debt.

They are comfortable with debt because we’ve normalized it.

We have promoted a culture of materialism that is based on what you have.

6. A grasshopper complex wants you to return to the familiar.

They said let’s go back to Egypt at least we had leaks and garlic.

7. The grasshopper syndrome causes delayed development.

They could’ve walked straight into their promise but it cost them 40 years.

Our confession will either imprison us or set us free. Our confession is the result of our believing, and our believing is the result of our right or wrong thinking.
Kenneth E Hagin

Philippians 4:8
Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things [are] honest, whatsoever things [are] just, whatsoever things [are] pure, whatsoever things [are] lovely, whatsoever things [are] of good report; if [there be] any virtue, and if [there be] any praise, think on these things.

Romans 8:5-6
For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.

Romans 12:2
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what [is] that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Colossians 3:2
Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.

1 Corinthians 3:18
Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you seems to be wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise.

Proverbs 15:22
Without counsel, plans go awry, But in the multitude of counselors they are established.

2 Timothy 2:7
Consider what I say, and may the Lord give you understanding in all things.

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.

2 Corinthians 10:5
Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;
