Who was Nicodemus?
Nicodemus was a member of the Sanhedrin, which was the ruling body of the Jews. Each city could have a Sanhedrin, which functioned as the “lower courts.” Under Roman authority in the time of Christ, the Jewish nation was allowed a measure of self-rule, and the Sanhedrin in Jerusalem was the final court of appeals for matters regarding Jewish law and religion. This was the body that ultimately condemned Jesus, yet they had to get Pilate to approve their sentence since the death penalty was beyond their jurisdiction under Roman law. It appears that Nicodemus was part of the Great Sanhedrin in Jerusalem.
https://www.gotquestions.org/Nicodemus-in-the-Bible.html-He was, at least partially, just doing his job as a member of the Sanhedrin and checking out any teachers or public figures who could potentially be spreading false information.
-He also just seemed legitimately curious.
-He KNEW the Law and prophecy.
V. 1- Are you a Pharisee?
Pharisees
As a general rule, the Pharisees were self-righteousness and smug in their delusion that they were pleasing to God because they kept the Law—or parts of it, at least. As Jesus pointed out to them, however scrupulous they were in following the finer points of ritualism, they failed to measure up to God’s standard of holiness: “You have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness”.
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.gotquestions.org/amp/Pharisees.html•Are you self-righteous?
•Do you look good on the outside, but questionable or even filthy on the inside?
•Jesus was seemingly the hardest on the Pharisees.
V. 2- Almost only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.
-Nicodemus understood some about Jesus. He recognized that He was ‘from God”.
-He calls him a “teacher”.
-These are true, but insufficient.
-One caveat about signs:
V. 3- Getting to the point
-Jesus gets right to the point.
-There needs to come a time, typically sooner rather than later, when we get to the point with our lost friends, relatives, or strangers.
-We need to be clear about what they need. We love them. Let’s give them what they need.
-Who is your one?
V. 3- Born again
•First birth does nothing. It doesn’t matter what your family line is.
-Some Rabbis of that day taught that Abraham stood at the gates of hell making sure that none of his descendants accidentally wandered in there.
•It doesn’t matter your nationality. I’m so glad to be born in a place where we have freedom of religion and that the majority of people claim to be Christians. However, that does not save us.
•Your socioeconomic status doesn’t matter. There’s not enough money or status to buy your way into heaven.
•All that matters is that you are born again!
V. 3- From Above
•“Again”- or from Above
•This new birth has to be from above. We can’t re-birth ourselves! This is yet another reason to understand that you can’t earn it and only once you get it can you possibly follow Him.
•Regenerated, not reformed.
•We can’t clean our old self up and get clean enough to be acceptable in the presence of a just and perfect God.
•We have to be new!
“All over the New Testament this idea of re-birth, re-creation occurs.” (Barclay)
· 1 Peter speaks of being born anew by God’s great mercy (1 Peter 1:3)
· 1 Peter speaks of being born anew from an imperishable seed (1 Peter 1:22-23)
· James speaks of God bringing us forth by the word of truth (James 1:18)
· Titus speaks to us of the washing of regeneration (Titus 3:5)
· Romans speaks of dying with Jesus and rising anew (Romans 6:1-11)
· 1 Corinthians speaks of new believers as new-born babes (1 Corinthians 3:1-2)
· 2 Corinthians speaks of us being a new creation in Jesus (2 Corinthians 5:17)
· Galatians says that in Jesus we are a new creation (Galatians 6:15)
· Ephesians says the new man is created after God in righteousness (Ephesians 4:22-24)
· Hebrews says that at the beginning of our Christian life we are like children (Hebrews 5:12-14)
“A man may cast away many vices, forsake many lusts in which he indulged, and conquer evil habits, but no man in the world can make himself to be born of God; though he should struggle never so much, he could never accomplish what is beyond his power. And, mark you, if he could make himself to be born again, still he would not enter heaven, because there is another point in the condition which he would have violated — ‘unless a man be born of the Spirit, he cannot see the kingdom of God.’” (Spurgeon)
V. 3- Cannot See
•There is one way.
•Imagine a cruise ship about to sink.......
V. 4- Thankfully, no.
-Nicodemus was taking this very literally. He understandably needed further explanation.
V. 4- How?
•Old
•Sinful
•Unchurched
•The only way you can’t be born again is if you are unwilling to submit to Jesus as Lord and/or refuse to believe He was raised from the dead.
-There’s no other reason/s that you can’t be born again when God calls you to it!
V. 5- Water and Spirit
•Born of water- there are numerous opinions about what this means- at least 5.
•The two that seem most likely to me are that “born of water” either means physical birth, or that it represents our cleansing through Jesus .
•Physical birth makes some sense because of the context and verses around it, and that we are encased in water in the womb.
•Cleansing makes sense because we have to have it!
•This connects to the Old Testament scriptures that Jesus later says Nicodemus should have known.
•No cleansing = no salvation.
V. 6- Flesh or Spirit
•There are only two types of people.
•The whole point of this conversation with Nic is to tell Him, and us, that we need more than we could ever get on our own. We have to be new. We have to be born again.
•God is offering this to all of us.
•You are not saved without this cleansing.
•It’s an amazing grace if God that He does cleanse us at salvation.
•This tells us again how amazing the work of Jesus is!
V. 8- The Spirit and wind
We are “regenerated by grace, that is, as free and sovereign, as powerful and irresistible, and as secret and imperceptible, as the wind is: and seeing so ordinary a thing as the blowing of the wind is of such a nature, and so little to be accounted for; regeneration by the Spirit of God, who is comparable to the wind, and whose name so signifies, need not be thought so marvellous and astonishing, though the natural man discerns it not, and cannot account for it.” -John Gill
V. 9- How can these things be?
V. 9, 10- Teacher of Israel
“Nicodemus’s exact position in the theological circles of Israel is not defined, but the language suggests that he was a very important person. Jesus implies that as the outstanding teacher of the nation, Nicodemus should have been familiar with the teaching of the new birth.” (Tenney)
V. 11-13- Descended From Heaven
•Jesus is the authority in heavenly matters.
•Jesus, who came from heaven, was the only one who understood all of this perfectly and is the one to explain it.
V. 14- Lifted Up
•Numbers 21
•This was prophesying Jesus being lifted up to die on the cross.
V. 15- Whoever Believes in Him
•That’s it. That is what you need to be born again.
•Look to Jesus! Just as they looked to the bronze serpent Moses held up and were saved, look to Jesus and you will be saved.
