Taste and See, Part 4: Spiritual Taste
6-16-19
Father’s Day
Our world and life itself would be dull and unappealing with no sense of taste. God has designed our bodies so that we can detect sweet, sour, salty, bitter, savory, and fatty substances. Adults have thousands of taste buds that are not visible to the human eye. Tastes and smells register in our brain and nervous system. Foods can produce strong emotions in us. Just talking about our favorite foods can cause our mouths to water.
From the temptation of Adam and Eve to eat the forbidden fruit, to Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness to turn stones into bread, food can be a curse or a blessing. The fact of the matter is that the first temptation to taste led to all the other temptations that we face.
Tasting directly connects the physical with the spiritual in so many ways. The Bible says, "taste and see that the Lord is good…” (Psalm 34:8). Satan, the enemy of our souls also says, taste and see that sin is good. If you give in to sin, you will develop and appetite for it.
The Proverb says...

The Proverb says...
The Israelites ate bitter herbs during Passover to remind them of the bitterness of their slavery. In the New Covenant, the Lord’s Supper celebrates our salvation in Christ. The bread and wine are things we taste as we remember Jesus who “tasted death for everyone” Hebrews 2:9.
In this message I want to stimulate your spiritual taste buds. If you leave here with a hunger for spiritual food thenn I believe God will be glorified. Think of this message as an appetizer to make you hungry for what God wants. Your daily quiet time can be a feast! What God says to you each day can be your spiritual bread. Jesus began His ministry with a fast.

The Bible shows us that our physical hungers point to a greater need that we have and temptations that we face. Let’s look at those.

II. Lust
-Ruining your appetite
Lust stimulates your senses but doesn’t satisfy. It ruins your sense of taste for what you truly need.
The children of Israel lusted in the wilderness and God gave them their desire. But it didn’t satisfy them. It made their souls lean.

III. Soul Longing
We need to make some adjustments to our spiritual diet. How can we do that?
1. Training your spiritual taste buds
We have become used to food heavy in chemicals, sugar, and artificial flavors. We have trained our taste buds to eat what is not good for us and we have become used to it. Spiritually speaking we are so influenced by the world and its appetites and flavors that we don’t desire the Word of God. There must be a change in our diet. We have acquired a taste for the world and it has taken over.

2. Weaning yourself from the world
Bad habits are hard to break. Good habits are hard to form. We must repent of our insatiable appetite and tastes that can’t satisfy. We must humble ourselves and recognize our need for God.
If you have been accustomed to feasting on the highly-refined media and movies of this age with artificial sitcoms or shows with high amounts of sugar to stimulate the flesh, refined salts arouse your anger, and bad fats make you sluggish, your taste buds have been tricked and now you to prefer this way of eating. You have acquired a taste for the world.

Decrease your intake of media and increase your intake of the Word of God.
Go to bed earlier to get up earlier with God.
As newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby, if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious. 1 Peter 2:2-3 (NKJV)
How sweet are Your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! Psalm 119:103 (NKJV)
