http://www.bethelcleburne.org- When you hear the word “Hero,” who or what do you think of?
- Real heroes are people whose efforts and sacrifices save lives, alter destinies or impact history.
- God works through ordinary people, regarded by the world as weak, foolish and unqualified to make an eternal difference.
- The Bible describes Abigail in a unique manner; it says she was beautiful and intelligent.
- Abigail was married to a man named Nabal.
- David sends his servants to Nabal to ask him to share from his bounty since it was sheep-shearing time.
- “Who is David? Who is this son of Jesse…” (v.10)
- David was not the kind of man to overlook something like this.
- David had good reason to be angry, but he had no right to seek revenge.
I. Abigail to the rescue
- With the stage set for a bloody massacre, Abigail enters the picture.
- She asks David to take revenge on her because she is Nabal’s wife.
- In everything she does we see her greatness.
- She gives David three reasons why he should spare her foolish husband:
1. God sent me to protect you from making a foolish mistake.
- “Let no wrongdoing be found in you as you live.” (v.28)
- This is the doctrine of the restraining grace of God.
2. God is the avenger of the wicked.
- “But the lives of your enemies He will hurl away as from the pocket of a sling.” (v.29)
- If you rely on the Lord to fight your battles, you will win every time.
3. You will never regret it later.
- “My master will not have on his conscience the staggering burden of needless bloodshed or having avenged himself.” (v.31)
- Revenge feels good now but it will feel bad later.
- David praises God, blesses Abigail and sees God’s hand in her intervention.
- Abigail is an unlikely hero because she was willing to intervene in a bad situation to protect her family.
- God solved a dangerous situation because a godly woman convinced an angry man to wait for God to do His work.
