God must be experienced in order to be trusted and enjoyed. In the physical realm, we experience the world and life through our five physical senses: seeing, hearing, tasting, touching, and smelling. When we walk in the Spirit, we are enabled to see what is invisible and what cannot be detected by our physical senses.
For we walk by faith, not by sight. 2 Corinthians 5:7 (NKJV)
Our spiritual sight comes through the eyes of faith. When we mix faith with the Spirit of God and the Word of God, we see the invisible God. There is a connection between physical hunger for food and spiritual hunger for the Word of God. God explained His purpose in allowing His children to hunger in the wilderness.
So He humbled you, allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not know nor did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the LORD.Deuteronomy 8:3 (NKJV)
Physical hunger points to a spiritual reality. It’s not that we don’t need food, it is essential to life. But so is the Word of God. God wants us to desire Him, trust Him, and see Him for who He really is. We will see God as He is one day; that is our hope. But God wants us to see Him today! We can experience Him today! Taste and see that He is good!Think about the difference between seeing a commercial on TV enticing you to order a pizza and actually eating the pizza. Watching the food channel may make you hungry, but only eating the food will satisfy your craving. In this new series, we are going to look at the connection between the physical senses and the spiritual dimension and how they merge.
God created us to be dependent upon food and water. He could have done it in a different way. Even in the coming Kingdom we will eat and drink. The first temptation involved eating. The Passover meal, the Lord’s Supper, and many other Biblical stories center on food and drink. The word ‘eat’ is used hundreds of times in the Scriptures. Eating, drinking, tasting, are normal physical actions that point to greater spiritual needs that each of us has. In this new series, we are going to look at all five physical senses and how they point to spiritual realities. In this message, we will look at taste and see. Open your Bible to Psalm 34.

Vs 1-3 are the exclamations of what David learned when he was in the stress of Vs 4-7. David cannot contain his enthusiasm and in Vs 8-10 he calls us to experience God’s goodness. He says:
Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man who trusts in Him! Psalm 34:8 (NKJV)
David had three obvious challenges in Vs 4-8 that each one of us experience:
1. FearV4
Fear is a common human emotion that paralyzes us. David says that his antidote to fear was seeking the Lord. If you are prone to fear something is lacking in your intimacy with God. In the New Testament, it is a love issue. John associates fear with a lack of maturity in love. There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.1 John 4:18 (NKJV)
2. ShameV5
Shame in this context is huge in the Hebrew/Middle Eastern context. David connects it with the face. We would say I feel guilty for what I have done. Our culture’s moral compass is so whacked that we don’t know how to blush anymore. Again, David’s focus was the Lord (V5), looking to God changed his face! His appearance literally ‘sparkled.’
For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.” Romans 10:11 (NKJV)
3. Trouble V6
David was between a rock and a hard place. He was closed in. He was in a tight place and couldn’t escape. Have you ever felt that way? Stressed to the max and can’t seem to escape. No peace. What did David do? He called out to the Lord. God heard him and saved him from his fears. Saved in this context means to be in a wide open place, to be free, delivered!
The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles. The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the LORD delivers him out of them all.mPsalm 34:17–19 (NKJV)
Jesus said it this way to His disciples and by extension to us:I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 (ESV)
God’s desire is that we come to Him for real satisfaction. I know that I am speaking to people right now that have unfulfilled desires. You are not satisfied. Something is missing.

1. Come to Jesus
Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28 (NKJV)
2. See Jesus
But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone.Hebrews 2:9 (NKJV)
Seeing Jesus as the Savior and conqueror of death and hell frees us from all lessor fears!
3. Experience Jesus
Jesus must be received in order to be enjoyed and known. When we receive His Word, we receive Him. He is life. His Word is life. He uses physical illustrations to point to spiritual realities:
On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” John 7:37–38 (NKJV)
For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.John 6:33 (NKJV)
