May 19, 2019 - Pastor Jeff Bender

There’s no denying the fact that moms have a tremendous impact on who we become as adults. Good or bad!

How many have watched the show “Long Lost Family”? It’s a show where usually adult children are trying to someone who is related to them.

Sometimes it’s parents looking for their children that were adopted, but mostly it’s the children looking for the parents. And 99% of the time, the person is looking for their mom.

Usually, it’s because they have a void in their lives that they believe finding their mom will fulfill.

The main question that they want answered is why were you not around. There is always hugs and tears and remorse over past decisions.

Moms play a very important role even when they are absent!
Usually these types of sermons are uplifting and encouraging Proverbs 31 moms, Mary & Jesus. . . both for moms and their children.

Look at the situation and look at God’s response.

While I hope that is what happens, we're going to look at scenarios in the Bible that we may not have thought about but we may encounter in our lives.

This won’t be a Proverbs 31 sermon.

Jenn Peterson said “Not everyone is happy on Mother’s Day, Not everyone is a mother, not everyone has a mother. But God is still God and he is able to fill that void.

I think we all have an image of a perfect mom, but we’re going to look at moms who didn’t have it perfect in their lives.
I. GROWING UP WITHOUT A MOM

Genesis 35:14-20

We know of a few families where illness took a mom too early. And the children didn’t have a mom around.

If we search the Bible we’ll find that God has a special place for those who for whatever reason didn’t have a mom figure.

It’s a situation we don’t like to face, but the Bible shows us that these things happen in life.

Psalms 27:10

While we believe that God is masculine, he also describes himself as having the characteristics of a perfect mom.

Isaiah 66:13

Psalms 68:5

So when he says he's a father to the fatherless, He is also a mother to the motherless.

If your mom was absent for whatever reason, God is still there waiting to help.

Exodus 2:1-4

II. MAYBE YOU SACRIFICED RAISING YOUR CHILD SO THEIR LIVES COULD BE BETTER
We have talked about the blessings of adoption before. God “adopted us” into His family-Adoption was God’s idea.

We hear the phrase “unwanted” when referring to babies. But that is a lie. Most adoptions occur because the mom or parents realize that their current life situations are such that the baby would have a better life with other people.

Referring back to Long Lost Family-all the parents who gave their child up for adoption never stopped caring for them and wondering how they were doing.

They sacrificed what they wanted for what was better for the baby.

And isn’t that what all parents do? Sacrifice our wants and desires because our children come first?

Adoption is a blessing for everyone. The mom knows that baby is going to be loved and better cared for. The baby (presumably) has a better life. The adoptive mom is also blessed.

Exodus 2:5-6

III. MAYBE AS A MOM YOU HAVE EXPERIENCED GREAT LOSS
The book of Ruth gives us a story of how God blessed Ruth and caused her life to prosper.

But what did it take to get to that point? Naomi’s husband and 2 sons died.

Ruth 1:20-21

Any mom ever feel this way? You are not alone.

During the time of suffering we feel that it won’t end and that God has abandoned us.

But even in her suffering, she was an encouragement and mentor to Ruth. She was fulfilling what God tells us in Titus . . .

Titus 2:4-5

Even though she was upset with God, she didn’t let those feelings take away her faith.

How many know, it’s ok to be upset with God? He’s big enough to take it. And he knows how you feel anyways.

As Naomi was faithful and trusting God’s leading in Ruth’s life, Naomi found blessing.

Ruth 4:13-17

IV. MAYBE YOU ARE A SINGLE MOM & YOUR LIFE IS HARD
There’s 2 things about this.

First we see: When Hagar found out she was pregnant by Abram the hard life started. She was being harassed by Sarah.

Genesis 16:6

She made a rash decision in the middle of difficulty. She ran away from her home and ultimately God.

It’s easy to make split second decisions to get you out of that difficulty, but usually those decisions made in the heat of the moment rarely turns out well.

What did God tell Hagar?

Genesis 16:7-10

The second aspect is this: Maybe your husband or boyfriend left or is not in the picture to help and you are doing it all alone and it’s tiring.

We already said that God is a father to the fatherless. That means as you teach your children about God, he will fill the void and make up the difference, but you have to let him.

God not only hears your cries, he hears the heart of your children.
If you stick it out, don’t look for a quick fix, and trust me when you make choices, I will take care of you.

Genesis 21:14-16

Genesis 21:17-18

V. RATHER YOU ARE A MOM OR A GRANDMA, YOU WILL HAVE AN EFFECT ON YOUR CHILDREN.

Let's make it for good!

2 Timothy 1:5

The modeling that was done for Timothy by his mom and grandma, made him into the person of faith Paul knew him to be.

And it appears that Tim’s dad was not a believer, and yet Tim’s mom and grandma were still able to instill their faith in him.

It is possible to lead your child to Jesus even if you don’t have a believing spouse, but it mostly depends on how you do it.

Dobson says “more is caught than taught”. Like it or not children, (and by children, I mean mostly daughters) you will become your mother.

And moms, they will become how you act, not what you say.
Why did we focus on these today? Because even though we know that God’s best and His plan is for 2 parent homes without strife.

The reality is this not a perfect world and not everyone has a Leave it to Beaver white picket fence life.

It can be a hard life but the Bible doesn’t shy away from hard situations. They happened then and they happen today.

The Good news is that Christ is able to help you navigate through every scenario.

John 16:33

If you had a great (not perfect) mom, thank God for it because as we saw not everyone does.

If you lost your mom (whatever age/reason) God helps you through that.

If you were adopted or you were the mom who denied herself to give your baby a better life, we know God was in the middle of that!

If you’re a single mom-stick with God-Don’t let circumstances or situations that you think will make your life easier draw you away from God.

Stick it out and you’ll be blessed.
