APOSTLES' CREED

I believe in God the Father Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord;
Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit;
born of the Virgin Mary;
suffered under Pontius Pilate;
Was crucified, dead and buried;
He descended into hell;
The third day He rose again from the dead;
He ascended into heaven;
And is seated on the right hand of God the Father Almighty,
From where He shall come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit;
the holy Christian Church,
the Communion of Saints;
The Forgiveness of sins;
The Resurrection of the body;
And the Life everlasting.

Amen.

SERMON:
“Lies We Believe” (part 3) ~ John 8:31-32

“Because Satan’s main weapon is deception, we must be prepared to answer his lies with God’s truth.”

1. It is All About Me, Acts 12:20-23

2. I Must Be Perfect, Acts 5:1-2

3. I Am Too Broken, Acts 22:19-20

“God’s truth results in gain, Satan’s lie results in loss—what are you believing?”
APPLICATION QUESTIONS:

What happens when the story becomes all about us? Why is this such a particularly dangerous and effective lie of Satan? How have you done battle with this in your own life?

Read the following texts and discuss the lessons and truths we learn from them regarding pride and the “Me-First” syndrome: Exodus 5:2; Proverbs 16:5, 18; Isaiah 2:17-18; Jeremiah 9:23-24; Daniel 4:28-32, 5:18-23; John 3:30.

Discuss in your group a moment or experience when you displayed “less than ideal” behavior or a decision as an individual, parent, employee, employer, etc. Are we more apt to post or discuss these experiences on Facebook or social media, or experiences that make us look good and that we have it all together? Why is this so?

What happens to us when we make our performance our standard of identity or value? How does that actually undermine the work of Christ?

Reflect upon the less than perfect people used by God throughout the Scriptures. Identify their flaws, failing, or sin, and how God used them despite these transgressions.

Read the following Bible passages and discuss how their truths bring encouragement to us as we seek to serve and to glorify the Lord. Psalm 103:10-12; Galatians 1:3-5; Ephesians 1:7; Philippians 3:12; 1 Timothy 1:12-15.
