"Rejected, Reviled, & Resurrected" Sermon Series

"Regime Change" Pt. 4 Matt. 21.1-13

Matthew 21:1-13

I. When Jesus rode into Jerusalem on that day, everyone present for His humble entrance, knew that a regime change was taking place; this was the day for which God's people had been praying for thousands of years!—the coming of their Messiah.

II.The crowd that had gathered remembered the words of the rabbis that had been passed from generation to generation: that it would happen during the Passover, that the Messiah would come and judge the ungodly! So, now, it's Passover week, and everyone gathered is excited that the ungodly Romans will finally be overthrown and judged by their Messiah!

III. The crowd can't wait to see what happens when Jesus rides into Jerusalem; they think to themselves, “The Messiah will judge the ungodly. He will finally remove the pagan Romans from power. He will ride right up to the Antonia Fortress, make His way into that Fortress—the very heart of the ungodly—and He will drive them out! Then, our glorious Temple will finally be free, and cleansed from the ungodly!”

IV. Instead of going to the Antonia Fortress as the people envisioned Him doing, something very odd happens: Jesus doesn't go to the Roman Fortress! He goes to the Temple! No! Jesus doesn't go to the Roman fortress, the heart of the enemy occupation; He doesn't go to the barracks to drive out the ungodly Roman soldiers; He goes to the Temple, the heart of the Jewish religion, and drives out the people who are providing a service of convenience for people coming to worship.

V. As the people had prayed for years, the Messiah come at Passover to judge the ungodly; but to their shock, He confronted them, and not the Romans.

VI. When the Messiah rides into town, you just never know where He might go, or what He might do!

VII. What would Jesus cleanse from the heart of God's people today?

VIII. Jesus might want to go after a sin that's very common among us in the Church realm: the sin of loving the way we do church, more than loving the people who might come into our Church doors!

IX. God’s people should worship, and worship well? Do we not realize that if we worshiped God “well” in our obedience to giving as He has asked us to do, that He would “open the windows of Heaven, and pour out to His Church blessings so great that we wouldn’t have enough room to take it in.”? That’s not just blessings upon the local Church and its ministries, that is blessing upon everyone who gives in obedience to God’s call!!

Malachi 3:8-10

X. When Jesus comes to town, you just never know where He might go, or what He might do! He might challenge the things that are most dear to us; the things that are keeping us, or others away from God. That same King is gonna come again, and when He does, this time He IS going to judge the ungodly!
