SERMON: "Lies We Believe” ~ John 8:31-32

“Because Satan’s main weapon is deception, we must be prepared to answer his lies with God’s truth.”

1. God is Really Not Good, Genesis 3:1-7

2. I Have Done Pretty Well, 1 Chronicles 21:1-7

3. It’s All About Me, Acts 12:21-23

“God’s truth is the best defense against Satan’s lies.”
APPLICATION QUESTIONS:

Reflect upon your own life and recount an incident with the group where you were given false information, deceived, or fell into a lie or untruth. What were the circumstances, what happened, and what was learned as a result of this situation?

Review John 8:31-32, 2 Corinthians 10:4-5, 2 Corinthians 11:14, and Revelation 12:9. What principles do we learn from these Scriptures as to Satan’s ways and our best defense? Where do we find truth? How are you applying this in your own life?

Satan is well schooled in the art of deception. Review Genesis 3:1-7, and in doing so be ready to share with the group things you notice about the manner in which Satan works. Why is he so effective? How do you see these same doubts and deceptions played out today?

What begins to happen when we doubt and/or question God’s goodness and His gracious purpose in our lives? We talked at length about the area of sexuality in the message, but are there other areas you have seen this deception at work? Why is this so dangerous? How are we best to combat it?

Review these passages and identify the underlying and uniting principles they illustrate: Deuteronomy 8:11-14; Job 12:10; Proverbs 30:8-9; Jeremiah 2:13, 17:5; Acts 17:25. Why is this trap so easy for us to fall into?

Review Jeremiah 9:23-24, Daniel 4:28-32, Acts 12:21-23, and James 4:16. What principles can you identify in regard to giving and receiving glory? How are these truths to be applied to our own lives?
