“Dysfunctional Dilemmas"
Hard truths about relational dynamics.
Ever had a family gathering, a meal etc and everyone's happy enjoying the time together and then in the middle of it someone explodes.
They let loose and no one knows what to say, the room goes quiet, some starts crying, others storm out of the room, some just look down and keep eating and pretend nothing happened.
Let's look at the story of Mary and Martha, two sisters but with some challenging relational dynamics, some dysfunction and insecurity that causes issues in what should be a beautiful meal and great time together with Jesus and his disciples.
In fact its all going well until Martha lets loose!
"As they traveled along, Jesus entered a village where a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her home. She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to His message. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations to be made. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her to help me!” “Martha, Martha,” the Lord replied, “you are worried and upset about many things. But only one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, and it will not be taken away from her.” - Luke 10: 38-42 (NIV)
1. My level of honesty determines my level of freedom.
Jesus says to Martha, “You're worried and upset about MANY things…”
Jesus says about Mary, “only ONE thing is necessary…”
"Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it." - Proverbs 4:23 (NIV)
"Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever.So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed." - John 8:34-36 (NIV)
If you can’t be honest about your life, you will never be truly free.
2. My ability to cover and not expose others determines my level of maturity.
“Fear causes us to hide from our failures and highlight the failures of others.”
3. My undealt with my pain determines my level of sabotaging behaviours.
“If I truly want to be free I must get honest about my pain.”
Conclusion:
Jesus wants us healthy and whole so we can function in relationships in a healthy way.
The beauty of Jesus is that He never wants to expose us but He does want to see us free. We see this played out with the woman caught in the act of adultery, Jesus doesn't condemn her, He wants to see her set free.
This freedom comes from trusting Him and being honest with our lives.
