Going Deeper is designed for use with your small group, a friend or on you own. Its aim is to create time for you to spend with God and his word. Do as much or as little as you like. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact one of our pastoral staff.
1. Pray for the needs of your Life Group, for our church and our leaders, for personal and corporate renewal, and to allow God’s word to transform us.
Share a recent entry from your Life Journal with the group.
2. This week we read from John 14 & 16, where we looked at the role and function of the Holy Spirit. What thoughts or questions did the message raise for you? What encouraged you, or posed a challenge to you?
3. What misconceptions about the Holy Spirit do you notice? What do you appreciate most about the Holy Spirit? Watch the video below
4. Read John 14:16-17, 25-26; 15:26-27; Acts 1:8; 2 Pet 1:20-21. The Holy Spirit who will be with you forever (14:16) has many roles. List off as many characteristics of the Holy Spirit as you can. When have you witnessed or experienced Him in any of these roles in your life.

John 14:16-17

John 15:26-27

Acts 1:8

2 Peter 1:20-21

5. Jesus describes the Holy Spirit as a legal advocate. The suggestion is that He defends you against the enemies of your heart. Read Rom 8:15-16; James 4:4-5 and ponder how He argues the case for you, and also argues against you.

Romans 8:15-16

James 4:4-5

6. Have you experienced the power to witness described in Acts 1:8? Are there times or situations where “witnessing for Christ” is challenging for you?
7. Read Rom 8:9; Eph 5:15-20. What assurance do you have that the Holy Spirit is in you? How can you be filled with the Spirit?

Romans 8:9

Ephesians 5:15-20

8. Take a moment of silence to consider how God is speaking to you through these verses. Is He asking you to make changes or to do something new? What concrete steps of response do you want to take? How can your group support you in these steps?
