We are starting a sermon series called: The Big Bang Theory.
“According to the Big Bang model, the universe expanded from an extremely dense and hot state (called a singularity) and continues to expand today.”
According to the theory, at the singularity there was no space, because of the extreme density, there was no matter, because of the extreme heat atoms couldn’t form and time also didn’t exist.
Then the “Big Bang” happened:
1. Mass suddenly began to expand.
2. Temperature dropped that allowed atoms to form and as the atoms clustered together matter came into existence which later on included planets, stars and galaxies.
3. Time also started at the Big Bang and scientists are speculating as to what happened moment by moment to a fraction of a second after the Big bang.
There are countless theories as to how the universe started and scientists disagree on so-so many aspects. But most of the Big Bang scientist agree that they don’t know what happened before the singularity state.
Here’s what the Bible say:
· In the beginning (time) God created the heavens (space) and the earth (matter).
(Gen 1:1)
· In the beginning the Word already existed. He was with God, and he was God.
(Joh 1:1)
· He created everything there is. Nothing exists that he didn't make.
(Joh 1:3)
The Bible is clear on what existed before time and space and matter: God
The purpose of this series, is not to debate over the different theories to try and proof them right or wrong.
But, we do want to say something about one of the building blocks of the Big Bang Theory. In 1929 Edward Hubble Edward Hubble discovered that the universe is expanding, like a balloon. So when you reverse an expanding universe you get to a singularity that is extremely dense.
Listen to these scripture verses:
· God, the LORD, created the heavens and stretched them out... (Isa 42:5 NLT)
· you are dressed in a robe of light. You stretch out the starry curtain of the heavens; (Psa 104:2)
(stretch a peace of material)
An Expanding Universe, is something that Edward Hubble discovered in 1929. But the Bible has been saying it for centuries.
The difference is, that the Bible is referencing to a Divine expansion.
Meaning, God is the author of the expansion.
That’s what we want to talk about. The idea of Divine Expansion.
God has set things into motion and its busy expanding at an incredible rate.
Now to Him who is able to [carry out His purpose and] do superabundantly morethan all that we dare ask or think [infinitely beyond our greatest prayers, hopes, or dreams], according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations forever and ever. Amen.
Eph 3:20 Amp
Infinitely beyond.
The God that set all this into motion, has also set a personal plan into motion for you and me.
His plan for you and me is infinitely beyond what we could dream or hope for.
His plan for His church, this church, is infinitely beyond what we can see. His plan for our community and for the city is infinitely beyond what we can pray for.
So the Big Bang Theory that we’re going to look at is not the one that wants to answer the question of how the universe started. We know how the universe started: Gen. 1:1 and Joh. 1:1.
The Big Bang Theory that we’re going to look at refers to the Big Impact that Jesus had on the history of mankind. Just as He set things into motion at the start of creation with an ever expanding universe, similarly He also set things into motion with quite a Bang when He died on a cross and rose on the 3rd day changing the destiny of mankind.
His purpose and plan for us, started with a rather Big Bang and yet it’s still expanding. Look at where the church started, it started with 12 disciples that followed Jesus, later on the twelve became a 120 and just before Jesus was taken up into heaven He told them:
Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. (Mat 28:19)
What was Jesus talking about? He was talking about divine expansion.
I can only imagine what must have been going through their minds. We’re struggling to convince the Jews in our own country to accept Jesus as the Messiah, and now we have to go and convince the whole world? But in the next verse Jesus says that He will be with them always. You won’t be doing this in your own abilities, this will be a divine expansion. Look at the church today, it has multiplied into a world wide movement.
Here’s my question to you:
1. Able:
Are you able to trust in God’s abilities? We often doubt whether God can do certain things. Can He fix my problem, can He heal my sickness, can He save me from this mess? My question to you is, will you allow the His splendour and majesty to grab your heart to the extent that it moves you to action to not only trust in what God can do for you but also what He can do through you.
2. More:
God is busy with Devine expansion, can you trust Him for more?
I’m not talking about you chasing after more and more for your own benefit, I’m talking about more of that which brings Him Glory.
Paulus writes: “To Him be the Glory in the Church”. In Doxa Deo we believe that every time we address the lostness, the pain and the brokenness of our society, His Glory becomes more evident and visible. So can you trust Him for more of His glory to become visible in our city?
3. Dare:
What are you prepared to do so that this can happen? Will you dare to trust Him, will you dare to pray bigger, will you dare to give more time, will you dare to invest more finances, will you dare to be more generous with your talents in order to see His kingdom expand for His Glory.
4. In Us
I’ve already said it, you need to trust God not just for expansion in your life but also expansion through your life. His power is working in you. So often we look at others and wonder what will God do through them. Maybe you’re disqualifying yourself.
Maybe your scared, you know this is going to challenge you on a personal level and you’re not sure if you’re ready for it. Remember Paul says it’s His power working within you to resulting in Devine expansion.
The Big Bang Theory that we want to discover over the next few week, is going to challenge us to be stretched by God, that we will discover divine expansion. It will challenge us to get a new perspective on why we are here and what His purpose is for our lives and for the world around us.
