The Book Of James Series Part 5 - Favoritism
How Saul was chosen
1 Samuel 9:1-5 NIV
9:1 There was a Benjamite, a man of standing, whose name was Kish son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Bekorath, the son of Aphiah of Benjamin.
2. Kish had a son named Saul, as handsome a young man as could be found anywhere in Israel, and he was a head taller than anyone else.
3. Now the donkeys belonging to Saul’s father Kish were lost, and Kish said to his son Saul, “Take one of the servants with you and go and look for the donkeys.”
4. So he passed through the hill country of Ephraim and through the area around Shalisha, but they did not find them. They went on into the district of Shaalim, but the donkeys were not there. Then he passed through the territory of Benjamin, but they did not find them.
5. When they reached the district of Zuph, Saul said to the servant who was with him, “Come, let’s go back, or my father will stop thinking about the donkeys and start worrying about us.”
1 Samuel 10:17-19 NIV
10:17 Samuel summoned the people of Israel to the Lord at Mizpah
18. and said to them, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘I brought Israel up out of Egypt, and I delivered you from the power of Egypt and all the kingdoms that oppressed you.’
19. But you have now rejected your God, who saves you out of all your disasters and calamities. And you have said, ‘No, appoint a king over us.’ So now present yourselves before the Lord by your tribes and clans.”
How David was chosen
1 Samuel 16:1, 5-13 NIV
16:1 The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and be on your way; I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem. I have chosen one of his sons to be king.”

16:5 Samuel replied, “Yes, in peace; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. Consecrate yourselves and come to the sacrifice with me.” Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.
6. When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed stands here before the Lord.”
7. But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
8. Then Jesse called Abinadab and had him pass in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, “The Lord has not chosen this one either.”
9. Jesse then had Shammah pass by, but Samuel said, “Nor has the Lord chosen this one.”
10. Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said to him, “The Lord has not chosen these.”
11. So he asked Jesse, “Are these all the sons you have?”
“There is still the youngest,” Jesse answered. “He is tending the sheep.”
Samuel said, “Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives.”
12. So he sent for him and had him brought in. He was glowing with health and had a fine appearance and handsome features.
Then the Lord said, “Rise and anoint him; this is the one.”
13. So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David. Samuel then went to Ramah.
1 Samuel 16:7 NIV
16:7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
James 2:1-4 NIV
James 2:1 My brothers and sisters, believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ must not show favoritism.
2. Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in filthy old clothes also comes in.
3. If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, “Here’s a good seat for you,” but say to the poor man, “You stand there” or “Sit on the floor by my feet,”
4. have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?
Believers judging others
James 2:8-9 NIV
2:8 If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, “Love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing right.
9. But if you show favoritism, you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers.
Believers loving others
Matthew 22:36-40 NIV
22:36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”
37. Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind."
38. This is the first and greatest commandment.
39. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’
40. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

What is God saying to you?
