Day One
Read Acts 2:14-21
Read Acts 2:14-21
Beginning with verse 14 we read the first Christian sermon ever preached. Peter’s sermon follows a pattern which is repeated over and over in the New Testament. Most sermons in the New Testament contain the following:
· There is the proof that Jesus and all that happened to him is a fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy
· In Jesus the Messiah has come, the Messianic prophecies are fulfilled, and the new age has dawned
· Jesus was born in the line of David, that he had taught, that he had worked miracles, that he had been crucified, and that he had been raised from the dead and that he is now at the right hand of God.
· Jesus would return to glory to establish his kingdom on earth.
· The preaching would finish with the statement that in Jesus alone was salvation, that he who believed on him would receive the Holy Spirit and that he who would not believe was destined for terrible things.
What is the point Peter is wanting the people to understand about current events?

In Acts 2:17 Peter refers to the “last days” – what do you understand this to mean?
We should notice that the speaking in tongues stopped when Peter began to preach. The Holy Spirit now worked through Peter’s preaching and would not work against Himself through tongues at the same time.
This focus on God’s Word did not quench the moving of the Holy Spirit; it fulfilled what the Holy Spirit wanted to do. All the signs and wonders and speaking in tongues were preparing for the work of God’s Word.
Unfortunately, some people set the Word against the Spirit. They almost think it’s more spiritual if there is no Bible study. Sadly, this is often due to the weak and unspiritual teaching of those who teach the Bible. David Gudzik
What observations do you have regarding the 3 statements above from David Gudzik?

Peter says, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” What does that look like? What

Day Two
Read Acts 2:22-36
Read Acts 2:22-36
Many people would think it enough for Peter to stop after the quotation from Joel – think of what we have in it! An outpouring of the Holy Spirit, miraculous dreams, visions, and prophecy, signs and wonders regarding the Day of the Lord, and an invitation to call on the name of the Lord. But it isn’t enough, because Peter hasn’t spoken about the saving work of Jesus on our behalf. Everything until now has been introduction: now comes the essential message. - Gudzik
From Peter’s sermon, what facts about Jesus would be key for non-believers to understand?

Concerning today’s reading William Barclay writes “This passage insists that the Cross was no accident. It belonged to the eternal plan of God. Over and over again Acts states this same thing. The thought of Acts safeguards us from two serious errors in our thinking about the death of Jesus. (a) The cross is not a kind of emergency measure flung out by God when everything else had failed. It is part of God’s very life.
(b) We must never think that anything Jesus did changed the attitude of God to men. It was by God Jesus was sent.
Barclay talks about two serious errors in our thinking about the death of Jesus – are these errors that you need to correct in your life? If so – why does it matter?

Day Three
Acts 2:37-41
Acts 2:37-41
In response to Peter’s sermon, the crowd turn to him and to the rest of the apostles and ask, “What shall we do?” This question is a genuine response to the preaching of God’s word. Peter’s sermon demonstrates how the gospel can be preached with such clarity and power that the only appropriate response is to ask, “What should we do?” – R. Albert Mohler, Jr.
What are the two things Peter states the crowd must do? What is so important about these two?

When John the Baptist began preaching, he said“Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand! (Matthew 3:2). When Jesus began to preach, He said “Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand (Matthew 4:17) Now when Peter begins to preach, he starts with “Repent”
Obviously repent is a concept we need to grasp. What does the word repent mean in these passages?
