Understanding Old Testament Types
· Definition:a “type” in scripture is a person, event or institution in the Old Testament which foreshadows a person or institution in the New Testament (1 Corinthians 10:11)
· The Old Testament types foreshadow Jesus
· Jesus is the main focus, fulfillment, beauty and the substance of the Old Testament Types
The Story of Joseph (Genesis 30-50)
· Joseph was specially loved by his father (Genesis 37:3)
· Joseph dreamed that he would rule over his brothers (Genesis 37:5)
· Joseph was sent by his father to find his brothers (Genesis 37:14)
· Joseph’s brothers conspired against him and determined to kill him (Genesis 37:18-20)
· They sold Joseph into slavery for 20 pieces of silver (Genesis 37:28)
· Joseph became a servant in Potiphar’s house, and the Lord was with him (Genesis 39:3-4)
· Joseph was tempted to sin, but resisted temptation (Genesis 39:12)
· Joseph is falsely accused and wrongfully punished (Genesis 39:17-18, 19-20)
· God was with Joseph even in his suffering – part of His plan (Genesis 39:21; 41:5)
