Understanding Old Testament Types

· Definition:a “type” in scripture is a person, event or institution in the Old Testament which foreshadows a person or institution in the New Testament (1 Corinthians 10:11)

· The Old Testament types foreshadow Jesus

· Jesus is the main focus, fulfillment, beauty and the substance of the Old Testament Types


The Story of Joseph (Genesis 30-50)

· Joseph was specially loved by his father (Genesis 37:3)

· Joseph dreamed that he would rule over his brothers (Genesis 37:5)

· Joseph was sent by his father to find his brothers (Genesis 37:14)

· Joseph’s brothers conspired against him and determined to kill him (Genesis 37:18-20)

· They sold Joseph into slavery for 20 pieces of silver (Genesis 37:28)

· Joseph became a servant in Potiphar’s house, and the Lord was with him (Genesis 39:3-4)

· Joseph was tempted to sin, but resisted temptation (Genesis 39:12)

· Joseph is falsely accused and wrongfully punished (Genesis 39:17-18, 19-20)

· God was with Joseph even in his suffering – part of His plan (Genesis 39:21; 41:5)

· Joseph is miraculously promoted to the highest place in Pharaoh’s court (Genesis 41:41-42, 43-44)

· Joseph saves his family (Genesis 45:10-11)

· Joseph died promising a better future (Genesis 50:24-25)


Joseph is a “Type”, Pointing to Jesus

· Jesus is especially loved of His Father (Matthew 3:17)

· Jesus foretold of the day when He would rule over His brothers (Matthew 26:64)

· Jesus was sent by His Father to save His brothers (Luke 20:13)

· Jesus was hated by his brothers that He had come to save (John 15:25)

· Jesus is sold for 30 pieces of silver (Matthew 26:15)

· Jesus became a servant of all (Philippians 2:7)

· Jesus was tempted just like us, but never did He sin (Hebrews 4:15)

· Jesus was falsely accused and wrongfully put to death (Matthew 26:59)

· Jesus suffering was all a part of God’s plan to provide salvation for mankind (Isaiah 53:10-11)

· Jesus was raised from the dead and promoted to the right-hand of God – every knee will bow (Philippians 2:9-11)

· Jesus saves people – all that come to Him in faith (Matthew 1:26)

· Jesus left the earth with a promise of a better day coming (John 14:2-3)
