Going Deeper is designed for use with your small group, a friend or on you own. Its aim is to create time for you to spend with God and his word. Do as much or as little as you like. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact one of our pastoral staff.
1. Pray for the needs of your Life Group, for our church and our leaders, for personal and corporate renewal, and to allow God’s word to transform us.
Share a recent entry from your Life Journal with the group.
2. This week, we focused on Jesus being the light to the world as found in John 1:4-5. Just as in Genesis, God declared, “Let there be light”, so too, the source of light himself entered our world to redeem humankind. What are some of the thoughts or questions do you have from the message?
3. Read John 1:3-4. John points out that Jesus is the Light and that this Light will never be overcome by darkness. When have you experienced this darkness-banishing power of Jesus’ Light in your life?
4. If Jesus dwells in us, then shouldn’t His light that penetrates darkness shine from us all the time? What things (remnants of darkness) might cloud or obscure our light-shining lens? What can we do about it? How can the group help us?
5. Many scriptures tell us that people have a natural tendency to allow the world’s darkness to keep them from Jesus’ light. Read: Matt. 13:14-15, John 12:37-39, Rom. 1:18-22, 1 John 1:5-8. Why would people do that? Do we Christians ever close our eyes or ears to Jesus? Why? What can we do about it?
6. Is there a difference between being passive reflectors of Jesus’ light and actively endeavoring to let Jesus’ light shine out from us? Discuss this in the group
7. Take a moment of silence to consider how God is speaking to you through these verses. Is He asking you to make changes or to do something new? What concrete steps of response do you want to take? How can your group support you in these steps?
