BIBLE SPOTLIGHT
Our text for today comes from the book of James and it states“My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry” - James 1: 19
So...
- What do you hear when you read that statement
- What picture comes to mind when you read that text
- What emotions do those words conjure up for you
UNDERSTANDING CONTEXT

The book of James was written by James who was the half brother of Jesus Christ. Yet the amazing thing about the letter of James and the letter of Jude, who was also a half brother of Jesus is that there is no reflection of the human relationship with Christ here at all.

The letter was written specifically to Jewish Christian and it was the opposite letter written to the Jewish believers after the church council met in Jerusalem to determine how Gentiles believers in Antioch, Syria, and Cilicia should behave.

The theologian David Pawson said “James is one of the easiest book in the bible to understand and one of the hardest to embark on.
At the heart of James message was the desire to let people know that “everything you do has a consequence either negative or positive”.
James is concerned about people who say one thing but there life doesn’t reflect what they say, that is why the key verse in the book is found in 2:26 Just as the body is dead without breath, so also faith is dead without good works.

To James having faith meant there was a corresponding action to back up that faith, where this is not evident then something is wrong.

Therefore, where faith is active, it will accomplish certain things: it will enhance the way we treat others, it will help us handle temptation, it will give us confidence to engage with others, it broadens our mind and spirit, it teaches us patience and encourages prayer.

In our text today James said “My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry” - James 1: 19
