A Father's Day Scripture Reading
Leader: A father leads.
People: Proverbs 20:7 says, “The righteous man walks in his integrity; His children are blessed after him.”
Leader: A father teaches.
People: Proverbs 4:1-2 says, “Hear, my children, the instruction of a father, and give attention to know understanding; for I give you good doctrine: Do not forsake my law.” Proverbs 22:6 says, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.”
Leader: A father provides.
People: Matthew 7:9-11 says, “Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!”
Leader: A father disciplines and corrects.
People: Proverbs 3:11-12 says, “My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, nor detest His correction; for whom the Lord loves He corrects, just as a father the son in whom he delights.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17 says, “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
Leader: A father protects.
People: Proverbs 14:26 says, “In the fear of the Lord there is strong confidence, and His children will have a place of refuge.”

People: Proverbs 17:6 says, “Children’s children are the crown of old men, and the glory of children is their father.” 3 John 1:4 says, “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.”
Happy Father's Day!
Have you ever noticed we celebrate a lot of days in the U.S.? We celebrate birthdays… anniversary and Valentine’s days… religious events like Christmas, Easter, All Saints’ Day, and St. Patrick’s Day (not so religious now!)… history with Columbus, Presidents’, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Day… Memorial, Independence, and Veterans Day… New Year’s Day… Labor Day… Thanksgiving Day… “Take Your Kid to Work” day… and, this year, an Election Day. And, we celebrate Grandparent’s, Mother’s, and Father’s Day! This morning, is Father’s Day. And, I’d like to talk with you about what makes a godly father!

Godly Fathers Act Like THE FATHER.
So, what makes for a godly father? Earlier, we read how godly father’s lead, teach, provide, discipline and correct, protect, love, and leave a legacy. These are all SO true. But, first and foremost, Godly fathers act like the Father. Note. Father is capitalized! Isaiah 40:28-29 (ESV) says, “The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. He is all-knowing, powerful, loving, and wise. The more we, as fathers, emulate God, the Father, the better!
Godly Fathers Act Like MEN.
Also... Godly fathers act like men. 1 Corinthians 16:13-14 (ESV) says, “Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love.” In these two verses, Paul is talking to all men, husbands, fathers, shepherds, and leaders. He tells them to be watchful, alert, and guarded against spiritual enemies. He tells them to stand firm in the faith, like a tree planted with deep roots of faith in Jesus. He tells them to act like men, with courage and strength in obedience to the Lord and with confidence in His power. And, he tells them to let everything they do be done in love.
Life Application
John Wesley, founder of the Methodist/Wesleyan church once said, “Give me 100 men who fear nothing but sin, and desire nothing but God, and I will shake the world: I care not a straw whether they be clergymen or laymen; and such alone will overthrow the kingdom of Satan and build up the Kingdom of God on earth.” Men, can you imagine if we lived our life this way? We’d strive every day to act like God, the Father but also like men. Join me in this vision to fear nothing but sin, desire nothing but God, shake the world, overthrow the kingdom of Satan, and build up the Kingdom of God on earth!
Closing Prayer
Let’s pray. Lord, we give You thanks for the many fathers in our lives. Fatherhood does not come with a manual, and reality teaches us that some fathers excel while others fail. Give them all Your blessings and forgiveness. This Father’s Day, we remember the many sacrifices fathers make for their children and families, and the ways, both big and small, they lift children to achieve dreams thought beyond reach. So, too, we remember all those who have helped fill the void when fathers pass early or are absent. For those who are fathers, we ask for wisdom, humility, and strength in the face of the task of parenting.
