PG3 - wk1 Enhancing Your Relationship

We want to help our children and the next generation grow relationally rich with us, with God and with others. It’s relationships that bless our lives. So we want to unpack how to foster growth, health and biblically rich development within those relationships. We want to bring some biblical parental guidance. Principles, not just for parents – this is for grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends…because all of us care about the children God has put in our lives and we all have an interest to invest in the next generation.

Ephesians 6:1-4

*here’s the goal of this series: we want to invest and move our children forward relationally! WHY? because, you know: relationships really matter in life. We don't want them to simply be 'experientially rich', we want them to be relationally rich! In their relationship with their parents, with God and with others.
3 key questions (PG-3) in this series: to be continually asking yourself…
What am I doing to enhance my relationship with my kids?
What am I doing to advance their relationship with God?
What am I doing to influence & leverage their relationships?
the QUALITY of your relationship with your children will determine the weight of your INFLUENCE.
*you always want to keep influence (influence > control)
3 chairs:
-highchair (you have power because of your Size & Position)
-dining room chair (you still have some Position power)
-driver seat (Size and Position are fading; you need influence because of the depth/health of your relationship)

Ephesians 6:4

‘bring them up’ (1 Greek word - Ektrepho) = nourish, replenish, build into, nurture – guide/coach
-word is used elsewhere in NT to show how God nourishes, builds his church, his people. Paul is saying: don’t grade yourself by the ‘WIN’ – did you make them behave the way you wanted…he’s saying…grade yourself on the depth/health of the relationship - maintain influence as parents.
*Doesn’t mean you don’t discipline (the Bible is very clear about that – the Lord disciplines his children whom He loves - see Proverbs 3:11-12)
Your relationship with your children will impact the quality of every one of their future relationships.
*Here’s what we all know to be true: emotionally healthy people have healthy relationships and emotionally unhealthy people struggle to have healthy relationships.
3 investments every child needs, no matter the age/life-stage:
"Every child needs to E.A.T."
-Encouragement
-Acceptance
-Time
So ask the question:
what am I doing to enhance my relationship with my child(ren)?
