D. Illustration: Imagine if you were taken from your home by force in the middle of the night, put through several trials with fake charges, then beaten, whipped, forced to walk to your place of execution carrying the instrument of your execution. After that you have spikes pounded through your wrists and feet on a cross, a crown of thorns smashed on your head, and finally dropped into a hole and left die in front of a mocking crowd...
E. Now what would your final words be?
F. As Jesus experienced this, what were His last words
2. My God, why have you forsaken me
A. Matthew 27:46 – At about three o’clock, Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” which means “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?” (forsaken)
B. Because of sin, Jesus experienced for the first time, separation between the Father & the Son
C. 2 Corinthians 5 says that through Christ, God reconciled (restore relationship) us, not counting our sins against us. Christ, who had no sin, became the payment for my sin, so that I would not be separated from God
D. Jesus suffered the pain & separation that I deserved
3. Father forgive them
A. Luke 23:34 – Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.”
B. Jesus whole purpose in coming to earth was forgiveness
C. He was praying for those who caused His suffering
D. He chooses to love and forgive
E. You WILL be offended, how do you choose to respond
4. It is finished!
A. John 19:30 – When Jesus had tasted it, he said, “It is finished!” Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
B. The ultimate statement of victory, not defeat
C. In 3 words, Jesus paid the full penalty for sin & secured victory over the enemy.
D. He freed me from the death hold of sin & the way of true redemption had now been made complete
E. It’s now by our own choice that we let sin control us.
F. Isaiah 53:4-5 – Yet it was our weaknesses he carried; it was our sorrows that weighed him down. And we thought his troubles were a punishment from God, a punishment for his own sins! 5 But he was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins. He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed.
G. Jesus paid YOUR ultimate penalty because He loves you that much
