Psalm 119: The riches of God's Word

Thanks for joining us this morning as Mark Bean brings us a message from God's Holy Word!

Locations & Times

Kirtland Christian Fellowship

Sunday 8:45 AM

Sunday 11:00 AM

I. WALKING IN THE WAY OF THE WORD
I A. The way of blessing
I B. The longing of the heart
II. HOW PSALM 119 IS BUILT
In Psalm 119 there are eight synonyms used for God’s Word:

1. law (torah) 25 times = instruction

2. word (dābār) 24 times

3. testimonies (ʿēdôt) 23 times

4. rules (mišpāṭîm) 23 times = judgments

5. commandments (miṣwôt) 22 times

6. statutes (ḥuqqîm) 21 times

7. precepts (piqqūdîm) 21 times

8. promise / word (ʾimrâ) 19 times
Psalm 119 is divided into 22 stanzas, just like there are 22 letters in the Hebrew alphabet. So, there is one stanza for each letter of the alphabet.

Each stanza has eight lines, just like the eight synonyms used in the psalm for God’s Word.
Each line in each stanza begins with the same letter in the alphabet.
Each line in the first stanza begins with the first letter in the Hebrew alphabet, which is alef.
Each line in the second stanza begins with the second letter in the Hebrew alphabet, which is bet.
Each line in the third stanza begins with the third letter in the Hebrew alphabet, which is gimel.

And so on.
There are other psalms written like this, too, where each line in a stanza begins with the same letter in alphabetic order.

These kinds of psalms are called acrostic psalms.

Other acrostic psalms include Psalm 25, 34, 37, 111, 112, 145.
See also Lamentations 1—4 and Proverbs 31:10—31.
In Hebrew, alef looks like this: א.

The first stanza of Psalm 119 is written below.
Each line reads from right to left.

We can see that each line of the stanza begins with alef.
Quiz:
1.How many synonyms are used for God’s Word in Psalm 119?

2.How many stanzas are in Psalm 119?

3.How many lines are in each stanza?

4.How does each line begin in each stanza?

5.What is the name we use for a psalm where each line or group of lines begins with the same letter in alphabetic order?
III. WHY PSALM 119 IS BUILT THE WAY IT IS
III 1.The psalm is designed to teach. It reflects the work of a classroom teacher. It wants to instruct the young in the “a-b-c’s” of obeying God’s Word.

III 2.The psalm affirms that obeying God’s Word will cover every facet of human existence, everything from A to Z.

III 3.The structure of the psalm reflects what a life will look like when it delights in God’s Word: ordered, reliable, complete.
IV. A FEW THINGS THAT PSALM 119 SAYS ABOUT GOD'S WORD
IV A. Our attitude toward God’s Word
IV A 1. Delight
IV A 2. Better than gold
IV A 3. Sweeter than honey
IV B. Benefits from God's Word
IV B 1. Gives understanding for how to live
IV B 2. Keep us from sinning
IV B 3. Gives peace
IV B 4. Gives comfort
IV B 5. Gives freedom
IV B 6. Gives hope
V. JESUS AND PSALM 119
