AMA Week 4:
People and Floods
Today’s question was asked about the flood in Genesis 6-9, specifically, “Why?” The question is not so much about the mechanics of how the animals fit, or the debate surrounding a worldwide vs. regional flood, but the judgment of God. As God’s people, why would we celebrate this?
People and Floods
Today’s question was asked about the flood in Genesis 6-9, specifically, “Why?” The question is not so much about the mechanics of how the animals fit, or the debate surrounding a worldwide vs. regional flood, but the judgment of God. As God’s people, why would we celebrate this?
1. The Ark
What is the ark? The ark was not just a big boat used to escape the flood; it is not Noah's ark--the ark is God's. God strengthened Noah to build it, God filled it with animals, and God sealed the door so it wouldn't sink. It's God's ark preparing humanity for judgment.
2. The Covenant
The ark points to Jesus as the vessel of salvation; the covenant points to God's mercy and patience. God's grace changes Noah’s life, like it should change ours.
3. The Bow
The great bow in the sky points up--it's aimed at God. The ark is not God sweeping some people's sins under the rug and punishing others; it shows the judgment all our sins deserve. The rainbow should remind us where God delivered His judgment on sin--on Himself, in our place. TJ Tims once said, “You're not a better sinner than Jesus is a Savior.” It’s so true.

Discussion Questions:
Whether the flood was worldwide, regional, or symbolic isn't the main point — what it teaches about salvation is. Do you agree that this detail matters less than the message it points to?
What's the difference between believing facts about God and trusting Him the way Noah did — enough to act on it?
Why do you think we can be so uncomfortable with God's judgment?
What is the difference of seeing salvation as something you enter (a door) versus something you achieve?
"You're not a better sinner than Jesus is a Savior." What does that statement mean to you personally, especially if you've ever felt like your sin was "too much"?
