The way we pray becomes the way we live with God.
Lesson 1: Praying like Jesus gets us into God’s world
The first part gets me in on God's world; the second part gets God in on my world. - Yinka Dawson, Lectio 365 Midday Prayer, 7 Aug 2025
– Call God Father
– Treasure our Father above all else
We want to enter into the alarm of the little child who stumbles across those who do not think that its father or mother is the greatest and best. And we must transfer that alarm to the lack of admiration and confidence that the human world has for our Father in the heavens. - Dallas Willard, The Divine Conspiracy
– Ask for our Father’s kingdom to come on earth
Lesson 2: Praying like Jesus gets God into our world
– Meet our needs for today
Prayer in Gethsemane:
1. Jesus names a feeling
2. He states a desire
3. He expresses trust

3. He expresses trust
The prayer is for our needs, not our greeds. It is for one day at a time, reflecting the precarious lifestyle of many first‑century workers who are paid one day at a time. And for a few days of illness could spell tragedy. - Matthew Carson
– Forgive our sins
– Rescue us from evil
Lesson 3: Praying like Jesus is learned through apprenticeship
CONVERSATION STARTERS
1. In Luke 11:1–4, Jesus teaches us how to pray. Who did you learn to pray from? Who has been a prayer warrior for you in your life?
2. Jesus teaches to begin with the Father’s name and kingdom before our own needs. How does starting prayer with God’s agenda rather than your own reframe the way you think about what you ask for?
3. “Daily bread” grounds prayer in ordinary life—needs, limits, and trust. Where do you need to move from self‑reliance to daily dependence on the Father?
4. Jesus places forgiveness at the center of life with God—both receiving it and extending it. How does forgiveness (or the struggle to forgive) shape relationships, desires, and the inner life?
5. The Lord’s Prayer doesn’t just express desires; it reshapes them. How do you see prayer forming your desires over time—aligning them more with God’s kingdom, God’s provision, and God’s way?
