THE FREETHINKER'S SHORTCUT
- This week is for the freethinker: not the person caged by rules, but the person with no rules at all.
- Many of us aren't running from organization. We're addicted to shortcuts
- We've become destination addicts. The journey feels optional, like a fee we shouldn't have to pay.
- But what if the journey is where everything we actually needed was supposed to happen?
- Shortcuts promise quick destinations, but God is after the formation that happens on the journey.

LOT CHOSE BY SIGHT
- Genesis 13:10: "Lot looked around and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan toward Zoar was well watered, like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt. (This was before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.)"
- Abram let Lot choose first. Lot chose the lush, green valley because of what he could see.
- Genesis 13:13: the narrator warns us that Sodom's people were wicked, great sinners against the LORD. We see the danger; Lot can't yet.
- Lot didn't choose evil. He chose what looked obvious. The shortcut didn't look like Sodom; it looked like blessing.
- Shortcuts always hide the ending. They show the relief but hide the regret.

THE DRIFT
- Genesis 13:12: Lot pitches his tents near Sodom. Genesis 14:12: he's living in Sodom, gets taken prisoner, Abram rescues him, and he goes right back. Genesis 19:1: he's sitting at the city gate, an insider.
- Near the city. In the city. At the city gate. Drift is gradual enough to feel reasonable at every stage.
- Nobody moves to Sodom in a day. Nobody chooses ruin; we choose the greener pasture, then the nearer one.
- The danger of a shortcut isn't speed. It's arriving somewhere your character, your family, or your faith cannot survive.

THE PUPPY
- Nobody buys a puppy after calculating vet bills and 3 a.m. emergencies. You see the face in the window and suddenly you own a dog.
- The puppy is cute now; the cost comes later. The payday loan is relief now; the interest comes later. The valley looked like paradise now; Sodom came later.
- Lot chose from the face in the window. The window never shows the ending.

SHORTCUTS IN SCRIPTURE
- Proverbs 7:6-23: the young man doesn't sprint into compromise; he wanders toward it, like an ox going to the slaughter.
- 1 Samuel 13: Saul panics, refuses to wait for Samuel, and grabs the sacrifice himself. When God's timeline doesn't match our clock, we grab the wheel.
- Genesis 16: even Abraham, who trusted God in chapter 13, tries to manufacture the promise through Hagar when waiting feels like failure.
- Shortcuts rarely announce themselves as evil. Expedience whispers, "This is just efficiency."

ABRAM'S LONG ROAD
- Before Lot chose, Abram chose not to choose. He surrendered first pick and trusted God's promise with whatever was left.
- That's not passivity. It's the hardest thing: releasing control of the outcome.
- The opposite of the shortcut isn't strain. It's trust.

THE RELIGIOUS SHORTCUT
- Matthew 6:1-18: Jesus describes people who pray on street corners and fast with miserable faces so everyone notices how spiritual they are.
- The prayer is real. The fasting is real. But the goal is appearance, not intimacy: looking godly without becoming godly.
- It's godliness at a discount. They get what they aimed for (people notice) but miss being formed in secret by the Father.

SOME THINGS NEVER GO ON SALE
- Louis Vuitton, Rolex, Ferrari, Tiffany: no clearance rack, no bargain bin. It costs what it costs.
- Meaning, character, integrity, intimacy with God don't go on sale. No coupon code for character; no Black Friday deal on faithfulness.
- Genesis 25:29-34: Esau traded his birthright for a bowl of stew, wanting the blessing at a discount.
- You can pay the cost of faithfulness now, or pay the far greater cost of the shortcut later.

JESUS REFUSED EVERY SHORTCUT
- Matthew 4:1-11: in the wilderness, Jesus is offered bread without trust, proof without faith, and a kingdom without the cross.
- Each temptation was a legitimate destination through an illegitimate route. Peter offered the same deal in Mark 8: glory without suffering.
- Jesus would rather walk the Father's hard road than arrive somewhere "good" without him.
- He didn't turn stones to bread, didn't bow for a kingdom, didn't call angels off the cross.

YOUR NEXT STEPS
- Ask: is there an elaborate story I'm telling myself to make an obvious shortcut sound wise?
- Name it: where are you trading long-term integrity for short-term comfort?
- Take one small, specific, sacrificial step this week, and tell someone.
- Decide in advance one shortcut you will refuse when pressure, impatience, or fear rises.
