MAIN POINT

Rhythms of Resilience are disciplines we practice before encountering pressures and stresses that INCREASE our CAPACITY to withstand & endure them without being crushed by them.

WHAT KIND OF SHAPE ARE YOU IN ... PHYSICALLY?
THE WORLD OF JESUS

• He spent 40 days in the desert (fasted).
• He walked from town to town.
• He climbed hills and mountains.
• He worked as a carpenter.
• He stood and taught crowds for hours.

Daily Existence demanded Physical Exertion.
hey
OUR WORLD

• Knowledge-based (Sitting long hours)
• Leisure... even lazy
• Carry our groceries in the house
• Wear gadgets that help us track 10K steps
• Run....only if something is chasing us; pop-up thunderstorm
• Only 20% of Americans meet national guidelines for weekly endurance and strength exercise (TheComfort Crisis, 222).

Our comfort reduces our capacity to withstand pressure and endure stress.

2-RHYTHM OF REST AND RECOVERY

• Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on the cushion. (Mark 4:38)
• Yet the news about him spread, so that crowds of people came to him to be healed . . . But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed. (Luke 5:15–16)
• Because so many people were coming and going the disciples didn’t have a chance to eat, so he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.” (Mark 6:31)
• And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.”And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day. (Genesis 1:3–4)
• By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done. (Genesis 2:2–3)
REST AND RECOVER

• Daily Rest—Circadian Rhythm
• Weekly Rest—Take Off
• Extended Rest—Vacation
• Nap—Recharge
• Withdraw—Get away from people
• Downtime—Take it easy
When you OVERWORK it is easy to become OVERWHELMED by the pressures and stresses of life.
3-RHYTHM OF PRAYER
WHAT IS PRAYER?

Calling on God to . . .
• Fulfill what He has Promised
• Empower you to Reflect His Glory
• Give what’s Needed to Fulfill His Mission and Calling in your life
WHAT IS NEEDED TO PRAY WELL?

• My Identity in Him
• His Mission in the World
• His Word that is Directive and Formative
