When Jesus Meets Us: Our Misunderstanding Part 2
He speaks to our skepticism unraveling it with the reality of who He is
John 1: Nathaniel
He speaks to our distress providing abundance and hope in Him
John 2: Wedding Party
He speaks to our misunderstanding revealing what we truly need
John 3-4: Nicodemus/Woman at Well
The intended contrast:
What’s so bad about Samaria?
-931BC kingdom splits north Israel and south Judea
-722BC Israel conquered by Assyria (2Kings)
-586BC Judea conquered by Babylon (Daniel)
-Jews intermarry, adopt pagan gods, area becomes Samaritans
-Samaritans see only Pentateuch as Scripture
-330BC Alexander Great makes Samaria key base
-128BC Jews attack Samaria, destroy Shechem and temple on Mt Gerizim
-1st century Jews considered Samaritans racially inferior heretics
-Jesus takes quickest, worst way to get to Galilee, thru Samaria
What’s going on with this woman?
-she pulls water at noon to avoid other women
-she is not intimidated by stranger at the well
-she is intelligent, strong, straightforward
-she perhaps misread by some as immoral woman
-God has been watching her, goes out of his way to meet her
-Jesus breaks barriers: gender, religious, cultural, political, moral
-she is a foreign multiracial culturally shamed woman who is open to Jesus
-least likely person on planet is one of first to realize Jesus is Messiah
How does Jesus guide the conversation to salvation?

He Speaks to Our Need for Living Water
10 Jesus replied, “If you only knew the gift God has for you and who you are speaking to, you would ask me, and I would give you living water.”
Our Need to Worship God
23 But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way. For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.” 25 The woman said, “I know the Messiah is coming—the one who is called Christ. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.” 26 Then Jesus told her, “I am the Messiah!”
Hot topic #1 Where to worship:

Hot Topic #2 Who is Messiah:
“I am” or ego eimi = the Greek translation of the Hebrew term Yahweh.
Exodus 3:14 =
Jesus brings Changed Life
28 The woman left her water jar beside the well and ran back to the village, telling everyone, “Come and see a man who told me everything I ever did! Could he be the Messiah?”
