As we conclude this series on the sermon on the mount, we look deeply at Jesus statement, "Do Not Judge". Should we really not judge at all? Is that even wise?
Judgment is more than forming an opinion. It is developing a conclusion about, often labeling people.
Why Do We Judge?
1) Pride: To Feel Better about ourselves - Judgement can make us feel superior.
2) Fear: It makes us feel uncomfortable and challenges our sense of security.
3) Insecurity: Your Faults distract me from my faults.
Why Shouldn't We Judge?
1) We don't know all the facts - We make assumptions but don't really know all the facts.
2) We are biased - we give ourselves the benefit of the doubt while judging others by what we see on the outside.
3) The standard we used on others will be used on us - Give others the grace you want to receive.
Jesus in Matt 7:6 and 7:15 seems to judge. Jesus judges the Pharisees regularly. Yet Jesus also offers grace, particularly for those on the margins.
Big Idea; Do not judge but be discerning. Only God is qualified to judge because he alone has the facts. We should be discerning of actions but don't label people. People can change.
I Cor 5:12 tells us that we should not judge those outside the church but we are to call up each other to a higher way of living if you are in the church.
Application:
1) Look in the Mirror First - Matthew 7:3-5 says that we should pull out the beam in our own eye and then we can do the speck in someone else's eye. Begin with self-examination then you can examine others. Before you point the finger at others, you need to look at yourself first.
2) Experience a Deeper Level of Community - We all have blindspots. The problem is often we can see our own plank in our eye. Do we have people who will lovingly share with us rough edges of being with us?
3) Get to Know Someone Else's Perspective - IT has been said you don't know a person till you have walked a mile in their shoes. Get to know someone different than you. Then maybe your heart may grow to better love and understand your neighbor.
