1. JESUS SEES MORE THAN OUR REPUTATION
Read Luke 19:1–10.
The crowd knew Zacchaeus as a chief tax collector and a sinner. Jesus knew all of that too, but he did not reduce Zacchaeus to his reputation. Jesus looked up, called him by name, and made room for relationship.
The crowd was not necessarily wrong about what Zacchaeus had done. They were wrong to believe that what he had done was all there was to see.
• What did the crowd see when they looked at Zacchaeus? What did Jesus see that the crowd did not?
• Why is it so easy to reduce someone to one thing—their reputation, mistake, family, beliefs, personality, or something they did years ago?
• What labels have other people placed on you? What labels have you placed on yourself?
2. GRACE DOES NOT LET OUR PAST HAVE THE LAST WORD
Read 2 Corinthians 5:17.
Grace says what we’ve done doesn’t have to determine who we become.
• Which is harder for you to believe: that Jesus forgives your past, or that your past does not have to determine your future? Why?
• What might Jesus see in you that you have difficulty seeing in yourself?
3. JESUS SEES OUR WHOLE STORY
Read Psalm 139:1–3, 13–16. God does not merely look at us. He knows us.
• How is being fully known by God different from merely being watched by God?
• Does the idea that God sees everything about you feel comforting, uncomfortable, or both? Why?
THE CHURCH NEEDS BETTER EYES
“Church, may we never become the crowd who blocks somebody else’s view of Jesus.”
Jesus does not simply teach us that we are seen. He teaches us how to see.
• Can we see someone’s dignity and worth without pretending that everything they do is healthy or right?
• How did Jesus offer Zacchaeus both radical welcome and genuine transformation?
• What would it look like for us to do the same?
Read Luke 19:1–10.
