I. What Happens at the Root Is Eventually Revealed in the Fruit (v. 26)

“For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins.”
A. The warning is not about the presence of sin. Christians sin, all of us. It is about making peace with sin: deliberate, settled rejection, not the believer who falls, grieves, confesses, repents, and fights.
B. Jesus said, “You will recognize them by their fruits,” and warned that not everyone who says “Lord, Lord” will enter the kingdom (Matt. 7:16–23). A profession of faith and the evidence of faith are not always the same thing. Eventually, the fruit reveals the root.
C. If someone you love comes to mind, do not dismiss it or ignore it. Pray for them. Talk honestly with them. Walk with them toward Jesus. The only thing that can save them is the Jesus they have dismissed.

II. The Fruit of Rejection Is Judgment (vv. 27–31)

“It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.”
A. There is no neutral position toward Jesus. We are either reconciled to God through Christ, or we remain separated from Him by our sin.
B. God’s goodness does not exist at the expense of His holiness. Because He is perfectly good, He must also be perfectly opposed to evil. His judgment is not a contradiction of His goodness; it flows from His holiness.
C. This is not God refusing to provide salvation. It is a person rejecting the salvation God has provided: trampling the Son of God, treating His blood as common, and outraging the Spirit of grace.
D. The right question is not “How could a loving God judge me?” It is “How could a holy God save me?” Romans 5:1: since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

III. The Fruit of Faith Leads to Perseverance (vv. 32–39)

“Therefore, do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. For you have need of endurance.”
A. Look back. When suffering came, you endured. When others were persecuted, you had compassion. When following Jesus cost you something, you still had joy. That is fruit that comes from walking with Jesus.
B. Faith changes what you value, and what you value determines what you are willing to lose (v. 34): what happens when obedience costs you money, popularity, a relationship, or comfort?
C. He does not say find your confidence. He says do not throw it away (v. 35). They have already seen God work. Do not let today’s pressure make you forget yesterday’s faithfulness.
D. Faithfulness is not always exciting. Sometimes it is simply refusing to quit, in a hard marriage, in exhausting parenting, in unanswered prayer, in the same temptation again (v. 36).
E. We are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls (v. 39). Your struggle is not necessarily evidence that you are dead. Getting back up and returning to Jesus may be evidence that you are alive.

Where Are You Rooted?
No fruit? → Don’t hide behind church attendance, baptism, or a prayer you prayed twenty years ago. Repent and come to Christ. There is still grace, still forgiveness, still a Savior.
Belong to Him? → Don’t throw away your confidence. The Coming One is coming. Don’t shrink back. Stay rooted in Christ, and keep following Him.
What happens at the root will eventually be revealed in the fruit.
