Keep Yourself from Idols
1 John 5:18-21
The only way to guard our soul against idolatry is to examine our idols, expose them as frauds, and exchange them for Someone better.
I. Examine our idols: Recognize them
1 John 5:21
What is an idol? An idol is anything that takes the rightful place of God in our lives.
Romans 1:22-23, 25
1) What do you think about the most?
2) What do you spend your time and money on without hesitation?
3) What do you believe you need to be happy?
4) What are you constantly trying to protect or control?
5) What are you willing to disobey God to get?
6) What are you the most afraid of losing?
What am I feeling? What am I wanting? What am I worshipping?
II. Expose our idols: See them as frauds
Idols promise a life of security and joy apart from God.
Idols play on our deepest emotions.
Idols always demand sacrifices from you.
Idols are terrible masters.
Psalm 115:8
