hey
God’s intentional creation of the Sabbath.
Shavat (verb): “to rest”, “cease” or “stop” especially pertaining to work. It is the root word for Shabbat, which we get the word sabbath from.

God’s direct commandment of the Sabbath.
Sabbath Year
Every 7th year, Israel stopped farming the land and let it rest. A year of rest and trust in God’s provision.

Year of Jubilee
After seven cycles of seven years, the 50th year was proclaimed a jubilee. A time when debts were released, slaves were freed, and land was returned. A year of freedom, restoration, and reset.
Five aspects of Sabbath rest:

Stop

“We can sometimes work so hard that we forget why we work at all. We don’t live in order to labour. We labour in order to live. And the sabbath is the day we stand still and just live, and let all the blessings we have accumulated catch up with us.” Rabbi Jonathan Sacks

Trust
Worship

Reflect

Delight

Practical Tips for Implementing Sabbath rest.

1. Decide what to stop.
What activities make me feel like I have to produce?

2. Decide what helps you trust.
How can I remind myself that God is in control?

3. Decide what helps you worship.
Don’t just remove things, add the right things.

4. Decide how you can reflect.
Look back on the week just experienced. Look around at the blessings that are present in your life.

5. Decide what brings you delight.
Time with family, enjoying a hobby, being among God’s creation.

Sabbath rest is a GIFT.
He gives Sabbath because He knows we need rest.
