MOVEMENT
Hebrews 10:19–25 | Mountain Park Church | August 30, 2026 | Keith Savage

Hebrews was written to Jewish believers under heavy persecution, tempted to go back to Judaism just to be safe. The author shows them again and again that Jesus is better, and better is worth staying near to. Hebrews 10 is the turning point: having shown us what Jesus has accomplished, the author now calls us to live like it, even in the darkest and hardest circumstances. That takes a three-directional movement from the Christ follower.

Big Idea: To live faithfully in the hardest moments, the Christ follower must move in three directions: Upward, Forward, and Outward.

I. UPWARD: Don’t run away; draw near. (v. 22)
“Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.”
A. God already knows your darkest thoughts, your failures, your shortcomings, and He looks at you through the blood of His Son and says, I love you.
B. Our first instinct when we fail is to hide, just like Adam and Eve (Gen. 3). We stop praying, stop worshiping, stop reading the Word, and drift into anger, anxiety, addiction, or the numbness of a screen.
C. Full assurance of faith is trusting that Jesus’ blood was a good enough sacrifice, even for your sin. You have been sprinkled clean and washed with pure water, made fit to enter God’s presence.
D. Draw near: confess it and repent of it (1 John 1:8–10). This movement is foundational. Without it, the other two are not possible.

II. FORWARD: Resist doubt; hold fast your confession. (v. 23)
“Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.”
A. This movement depends on the first. When you lose sight of the One who saved you, doubt moves in, especially in seasons of hurt and spiritual crisis.
B. The confession we hold to is not based on our circumstances, our confusion, or our hurt. It is based on the fact that He who promised is faithful, even when we are not.
C. Stay heavenly minded; this world is not our home, so keep the goal in view (2 Cor. 5:6–10).
D. Sacrifice daily as an act of worship, a return to fundamental Lordship over self-rule (Rom. 12:1).
E. Renew your mind with the Word instead of conforming to the world. The pull toward conformity is constant; Scripture in you changes how you see and interact with the world (Rom. 12:2).

III. OUTWARD: Healthy faith is lived in community. (vv. 24–25)
“And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.”
A. You have a purpose in the local body: to stir up love and good works in others. Love and service move through a church in a contagious fashion.
B. That requires a measure of transparency, a group of people who know your story and will bear burdens with you.
C. Being present is a commitment, not a convenience. It means changing plans and showing up as a servant, not an observer.
D. Isolation is dangerous. Like a lion separating the weak and tired from the herd, the enemy targets believers who drift from the body (1 Pet. 5:8).
E. Encourage one another to stay planted, not church-hop, and to watch over each other against sin and the evil one (James 5:19).

Where do you need to move?
Upward → You’ve been hiding, carrying sin or shame unconfessed. Come near. Confess it. Repent of it. Trust the blood of Jesus to do what you cannot do for yourself.
Forward → You’re close to God but worn down, and doubt has started creeping in. Hold fast. You don’t have to understand everything God is doing to trust who He is. Keep praying. Keep opening the Word. Keep obeying.
Outward → You love Jesus but have been trying to follow Him alone. Get connected. Find a Life Group. Serve somewhere. Let some believers know the real you, and start looking for someone you can encourage.
“And all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” Don’t leave here today in the same place you came in.
