What does lukewarm faith actually look like?

Jesus uses 5 descriptions of their current status (v17).

But You don’t ______________ spiritual self-sufficiency by becoming more self-sufficient. You overcome it by becoming more _________________ on Jesus. (v18)

v19, “Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent.”
• “love”- phileo - describes the love of a good friend
• “rebuke” - expose wrongdoing in order to bring someone toward repentance
• Sometimes love has to ____________ us in order to ___________ us. So His rebuke isn’t ______________. It’s love.

The question before all of us, “Will you __________ the ____________?” (v20)

Start talking:
• What’s something you really enjoy when it’s hot, and something you enjoy when it’s cold? Why?
• What’s something you’ve become more tolerant of as you’ve gotten older—and something you’ve become less tolerant of?

Start Thinking:
• Jesus describes the church in Laodicea as “lukewarm”. What do you think He meant by that?
• What are some differences between being spiritually lukewarm and simply going through a difficult season in your faith?
• Laodicea believed they were rich, secure, and self-sufficient, but Jesus saw their true spiritual condition. Why can self-sufficiency become such a spiritual danger?
• Jesus told them to “buy” gold, white clothes, and eye salve from Him. What did each of those represent, and what does this teach us about what we truly need from Jesus?

Start Sharing:
• Which description of lukewarm faith challenges you the most: complacency, self-reliance, spiritual apathy, cultural influence, or wanting Jesus as Savior but not Lord? Why?
• Are there areas of your life where you find yourself relying more on your own resources than on Jesus?
• Jesus says, “Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline.” How does knowing that His correction comes from love change the way you respond when He convicts you?
• If Jesus were to ask you today, “Have you let Me into every room of your life?” how would you respond? What room would be the hardest to open?

Start Praying:
• Ask God to reveal any area where you’ve become lukewarm.
• Ask God for grace to surrender any area where you’ve been relying on yourself instead of Him.
• Pray for a deeper desire to know Jesus—not just know about Jesus

Start Doing:
• What’s one practical step you can take this week to move from complacency to greater dependence on Jesus?
• Each day this week, pause and ask: “Jesus, is there anything You’re asking me to surrender today?” Then respond to what He shows you.
• For the next 7 days, take five minutes each day to ask Jesus:
“What room of my life am I keeping closed to You?”
Listen for what He brings to mind, then intentionally surrender that area to Him through prayer and one practical act of obedience.

Don’t just hear Jesus knocking. Open the door.
