Small Group Guide — John 7:37-44; 8:12-19, 27-36

Quick recap for the group: During a big Jewish festival, Jesus stood up in public and made two huge claims: "come to me if you're thirsty" and "I'm the light of the world." Then, when some religious leaders pushed back on him, he told them the truth would set them free — and that there's a difference between being a slave in God's house and being a son or daughter in it.

Icebreakers (pick one)
* What's one thing you genuinely cannot function without in the morning — coffee, your phone, a shower? What happens to your whole day when you don't get it?
* Growing up, was your house more of a "you'd better follow the rules or else" house, or a "we're figuring it out together" house? Did you feel like you belonged there no matter what?

Part 1 — Water: What Are You Thirsty For?
Jesus said, "Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink." (John 7:37)
* Jesus didn't shame anyone for being thirsty — he just told them where to bring it. Why do you think he made the invitation that simple? No test to pass, no qualifications — just "come."
* Be honest: what's something you find yourself going back to over and over, hoping it'll finally satisfy you — approval, distraction, being right, being needed? What happens after you get it?
* Jesus said this thirst gets satisfied by an ongoing relationship with him, not a one-time fix. Have you ever treated your faith as a one-time decision rather than something you return to daily? What would it look like to "keep drinking" this week?

Part 2 — Light: Who's Leading You?
Jesus said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness." (John 8:12)
* Think of a time you tried to navigate something important — a decision, a relationship, a season of life — without much light on the situation. What was that like?
* Jesus says following him is a day-by-day thing, like literally walking behind someone on a road, not a single decision made once and forgotten. What's one voice — culture, your own gut, social media, whatever — that you tend to follow more naturally than his?

Part 3 — Slave or Son: Where Do You Stand?
"So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed." (John 8:36)
* The religious leaders in this story thought their family history guaranteed them a place with God. Have you ever caught yourself thinking something similar — that your background, your good behavior, or your church attendance is what secures your standing with God?
* Jesus makes a distinction: a slave has no guaranteed place in the family, but a son or daughter belongs no matter what. Which one better describes how you actually relate to God day to day — someone earning their place, or someone who already belongs?
* If you're honest, does your relationship with God feel more like trying to stay on his good side, or like you're already family and can't lose that? What's shaping that feeling?
* What would it look like — practically, this week — to live like someone who already belongs, instead of someone still trying to earn a spot?
* Of the three things Jesus claims in this passage — living water for your thirst, light for your direction, sonship for your identity — which one do you personally need to hear the most right now? Why that one?
* What's one broken cistern (something you've been drawing from that keeps letting you down) you're willing to name out loud tonight?
Jesus isn't asking anyone in this room to clean up first. He's just saying: come thirsty, follow the light, and let him do what only he can do — turn a slave into a son who belongs in the house forever.

Pray as a group: Ask God to show each person one place this week where they're drawing from a broken cistern, and to give them the courage to bring it to him instead.
