1. What can be learned from the Psalms 113–118 (a.k.a. The Hallel) about the celebration of Passover? How might this content and background deepen our understanding of Holy Week (Mark 11-15)?
2. Why might Mark's account of Jesus' entry into Jerusalem deliberately emphasize words from Psalm 118, particularly “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord” and “Hosanna”? What would those words have meant to 1st century Jews?
3. How does the progression in Mark—from Jesus' entry into Jerusalem and the crowd's use of Psalm 118, to the Passover meal and the singing of Psalm 118, and ultimately to Jesus' crucifixion—shape our understanding of Jesus' identity and purpose?
