The Arc of Scripture | Baptism — The Outward Symbol of an Inward Position

Throughout today’s passages, we see that because God’s people are prone to forget, God has repeatedly given visible reminders of His promises and our relationship to Him. 1. The Noahic Covenant between God and all creation promised that God would never again destroy the earth by a universal flood (Genesis 9:12-13).
• The flood was God’s judgment upon a sinful world.
• The rainbow is a declaration of the end of hostilities between God and creation.
Action Step: The next time you see a rainbow, thank God for His faithfulness. The rainbow reminds us that God keeps His promises, even when humanity does not.

2. The Abrahamic Covenant between God and Abraham and his descendants promised a people, a land, and a blessing that would extend to all nations through his offspring (Genesis 17:9-13).
• God’s unconditional covenant with Abraham gave assurance of great blessings (Genesis 12:1-3).
• Circumcision was an outward reminder of God’s unconditional promise and of Abraham’s faith (Genesis 17:9-13, Romans 4:11).
Action Step: Reflect on God’s faithfulness to Abraham and allow it to strengthen your confidence in God’s promises.

• God’s conditional covenant with Israel at Sinai promised blessing for obedience and discipline for disobedience (Exodus 19-24).
• Keeping the Sabbath was a visible reminder that Israel was subject to God’s commands as their true King (Exodus 31:13-17).
Action Step: You are not bound by the Sabbath, but you do serve The King. Use your Sundays to remind yourself of your King and your responsibility to Him.

• While the New Covenant does not come with an explicit sign, we do have the Lord’s Supper (1 Cor. 11:25).
• While the New Covenant does not come with an explicit sign, we do have Baptism (Romans 6:3-4, Galatians 3:27).
Action Step: Identify with Christ today!
