Today we conclude our Summer Playlist sermon series. It is our desire to hear God's word in a fresh way through the lyrics of popular music. Here are the songs we have looked at in the series.
July 5. Golden by EJAE from Kpop Demon Hunters
July 12. Where I Find God from Larry Fleet
July 19. I Am Not Okay by Jellyroll
July 26. What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong
Aug 2. Demons in Your Choir by Red Clay Strays
The lyrics to this song are powerful. Check out the first verse and chorus:
[Verse 1]
Darlin', why'd you go and listen
They ain't got nothing good to say
Now there's so much life you're missin'
So-called friends led you astray
You know the devil keeps his company
With all his bright and shiny things
It ain't a church just 'cause it feels good
It ain't an angel 'cause it's got wings
[Chorus]
You've been singin' with the liars
And they're playin' your worst desires
If I could pull you from the fire
Then maybe I could save you
From those demons in your choir
This song speaks of what are the influences in your life and mind. Life moves in the direction of our strongest thoughts. Negative influences can lead you into danger which can lead to destruction. Proverbs 13:20 is excellent guidance for life:
"Walk with the wiss and become wise, a companion of fools suffers harm." This verse teaches us three things about friendship.
1) Every friendship is leading you somewhere - Friendships can lead you closer to God or farther apart from God.
2) Choose Your Closest Friends Wisely - The people you spend the most amount of time around will shape the person you become. Does this mean that you should not be around people who are not Christians? Aren't we supposed to share Gdo's ove with everyone.
Tbe general principle is this. Be kind and friendly to everyone but be formed by the wise. Enter into the lives of people who need Christ but do so being anchored to Christ.
3. Show me your friends and I'll show you your future - The friendships that you cultivate will determine the future you. Be intentional.
"Long term interpersonal relationships are the crucible of genuine progress in the Christian life. People who stay also grow. People who leave do not grow." - Dr. Joseph Hellerman
Application: Which relationships or influence do I need to prioritize or lessen in my life right now?
