Walking with Jesus #4 - Healing in the Home

Our summer series, Walking with Jesus, uses a chronological approach to look at the life and ministry of our Lord. This series will provide a deeper knowledge of the life of Jesus, a greater devotion to Him, and a life-long commitment to His mission for your life.

Our summer series is called Walking with Jesus. We are looking at the life and ministry of the Lord using a chronological approach which involves a study of the Harmony of the Gospels.
When we study the Harmony, it gives us a sense of walking with the Lord, experiencing history with Him.
Our passage is found in Section #43 of the Harmony and we will look specifically at Luke 4:38-39. This event, known as the healing of Peter's mother-in-law is His 4th miracle and follows the selection of Jesus' ministry team and first training session. As you may recall, the Lord had been at the local synagogue delivering a demon-possessed man when we left off last week.
It is good to note that this event takes place directly following what happened in the synagogue last week, which was only about 100 feet from Peter's home. We are examining Dr. Luke's account of the event, which provides a meticulously detailed account.
Jesus 4th miracle

1. Jesus engaged people in their real life.
Luke 4:38a; Mark 1:29
Sometimes our comfort and safety keep us from connecting with people and being used by God to do something significant.

Jesus demonstrated setting aside our personal preferences in favor of impacting people.

Howard Hendricks of Dallas Theological Seminary says, "You can impress people at a distance but only impact them up close."
2. Jesus demonstrated a watchful eye and a willing spirit.
Luke 4:38b

"See a need, meet a need"

The gospels record over 150 times that Jesus saw/observed something or someone. The disciples failed to see the needs the way Jesus did. While the Lord saw people with deep compassion for their physical and spiritual needs the disciples often used the lens of human limitation, viewing the crowds as logistical problems or individual distractions.
3. Jesus affirmed the value of women.
Luke 4:39a

In this culture, women held an inferior position in society. For Jesus as a Rabbi and not even a family member to approach her closely and touch her was a radical affirmation of her dignity and worth.
4. Jesus revealed His authority over the effects of sin.
Luke 4:39b
Jesus' plan for our lives involves living in His power and grace regardless of the environment we live in and the effects of our human nature.

How His authority is shown may come from a miracle, by medicine, through the counsel and fellowship of the members of His church, by our meditation and prayer, or any number of other methods.
5. Jesus (and the woman) modeled a servant's heart.
Luke 4:39c
The behavior of Jesus and this woman models an essential Christian truth: "The appropriate response of a godly, obedient heart is service."
