Weekly Sermon Overview:
This Sunday for Week 3 of our Faith250 sermon series, we travel back to the early 1800s to explore the wild, Holy Spirit-led frontier revivals of the Second Great Awakening. When faced with the massive injustices of their day, our Methodist ancestors refused to practice a faith that simply hunkered down inside church walls to wait for heaven. Instead, fueled by the fire of revival, they marched directly into the culture to launch the Temperance campaigns to eradicate the use of alcohol; advocated for social changes to shut down asylums and build mental hospitals; called for prison reform; reformed public education; promoted Women's Rights, including the Right to Vote; and radically changed the narrative on the issue of slavery and gave power to the Abolitionist Movement by advocating change from a scriptural, Christian point of view. Drawing from the historical context of Jesus' Jubilee statement in Luke 4:14–21 and the piercing, prophetic words of Frederick Douglass's landmark 1852 speech, "What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?", we will confront a powerful truth: when the Holy Spirit awakens the human heart, it doesn't just give us a private spiritual high; it drives us out to break chains, confront our shortcomings, and actively build God's kingdom of justice and mercy right here on earth.
