Word Study — Logos (λόγος): This was a loaded word for John's first readers. To a Jewish ear, "the Word" called up Genesis 1 — God speaking creation into being - an electromagnetic pulse, or an atomic bomb when He spoke!

Word Study — Skēnoō (ἐσκήνωσεν): This word literally means "pitched his tent" or "tabernacled." Every Jewish ear in John's original audience heard an echo here — the tabernacle in the wilderness, where the glory of God came down and took up residence in the middle of the camp (Exodus 40).

1. John doesn't begin with Jesus' birth. Instead, he begins before creation. Why do you think John wanted us to know who Jesus is before telling us what Jesus did?
2. The passage says Jesus is both with God and is God. Why is it important that Jesus is more than just a good teacher or a prophet?
3. John says Jesus is the source of life and light. Where do you see darkness in our world today and how does Jesus bring light into those places?
4. Verse 10 says the world did not recognize Jesus, even though He made the world. Why do you think people can miss Jesus even when He is right in front of them?
5. John the Baptist wasn't trying to make people follow him. He pointed people to Jesus. Who has helped point you toward Jesus? How did they do it?
