Last week we talked about Fresh Oil—the anointing of the Holy Spirit and the reality that God fills us before He uses us. We talked about not trying to live on empty, not trying to do spiritual things in human strength, and not confusing activity with anointing. We said that the Christian life was never meant to be sustained by effort alone, but by the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit.

But fresh oil was never meant to be the end of the story.

As I was thinking about where that leads us, it’s easy to come back to Jesus’ parable in Matthew 25—the parable of the ten virgins. All ten had lamps. All ten were waiting. All ten looked similar on the outside. But only five were wise enough to bring oil. And when the moment came, the difference between the wise and the foolish was revealed by what they had on the inside.

But here’s what struck me this week: the oil was never the destination. The oil was meant to fuel the flame. The oil was meant to keep the lamp burning. Which means if Week 1 was about being filled, then Week 2 is about what happens when what God fills, He also ignites. God doesn’t pour fresh oil into our lives so we can admire the jar. He pours oil so the fire can burn. He fills us so passion can awaken, holiness can rise, and our lives can shine in a dark world.

So today we move from Fresh Oil to Holy Fire.

Last week the question was:
“Am I relying on my own strength or the Spirit’s anointing?”

This week the question is:
“What in me needs the fire of God?”

Notice the language Luke uses.
-He could have said the Spirit came like rain.
-He could have said the Spirit came like oil.
-He could have said the Spirit came like a dove.

But in this moment, the Spirit comes as fire. Why?

Because fire tells us something about the nature of God’s work in us.

BIG IDEA:
Holy fire is the purifying, awakening, empowering work of the Holy Spirit in a surrendered life.

1: HOLY FIRE PURIFIES WHAT OIL PREPARES
As the final prophet of the OT, Malachi's main objective was to call the Jewish people and priests back to a faithful relationship with God.

Fresh oil fills the vessel. Holy fire tests what’s in it.
The fire of God is not just about emotional passion. It is about purification.

God doesn’t expose you to shame you. He exposes to heal you.

2: HOLY FIRE CONSUMES WHAT CANNOT GO WHERE GOD IS TAKING YOU

When you’re headed somewhere ordinary, you can bring a lot with you. But when you’re boarding a plane, there are things TSA will not let through security—not because they hate you, but because those things cannot go where you’re going.

Fire always asks a question:
-What in me is combustible?
-What in me is flesh?
-What in me is temporary?
-What in me cannot survive the presence of a holy God?

Holy fire consumes what cannot go where God is taking you.

BIBLICAL EXAMPLE: ISAIAH 6

Isaiah sees the Lord high and lifted up. The room is filled with glory. The seraphim are crying, “Holy, holy, holy.” And what is Isaiah’s first response?
“Woe is me, for my lips are unclean!” (Undone)

Why? Because whenever a man truly sees the holiness of God, he becomes aware of the uncleanness in himself.

Then one of the seraphim takes a coal from the altar and touches Isaiah’s lips.

The coal hurts before it heals. It burns before it commissions.

But after the fire touches him, Isaiah hears the voice of the Lord say,
“Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?”
And Isaiah responds, “Here am I. Send me.”

1) Presence
2) Conviction
3) Cleansing
4) Commission

3: HOLY FIRE DOESN’T ONLY BURN THINGS OUT—IT IGNITES THINGS BACK TO LIFE
One of the mistakes we make when we talk about the fire of God is that we only think of destruction.
But holy fire is not only destructive. It is also awakening.

Paul doesn’t tell Timothy to manufacture a gift.

He tells him to fan into flame what God has already put there.
Why? Because even called people can cool off.
-Even faithful people can drift into maintenance mode.
-Even church people can go through the motions.
-You can still sing the songs and not feel wonder.
-You can still serve the team and have no fire in your heart.
-You can still preach the Word and realize you’re dangerously close to doing sacred things without sacred awe.

Holy fire says, “I refuse to settle for a cold heart in a hot church.”

Oil in the jar is personal. Fire in the lamp is visible.

What God does in you was never meant to stop with you.

Application:
Holy fire should show up somewhere besides Sunday.

It should show up in how you respond when your family is under pressure.
It should show up in your integrity at work.
It should show up in your willingness to forgive.
It should show up in your boldness to pray with someone in the hallway, in the restaurant, in the hospital room, in the office.

If all our fire does is make us shout in church but never love people in the world, then it may be emotion—but it isn’t transformation.

The fire of God is not just for your experience. It’s for your witness.

SUM UP: WHAT HOLY FIRE DOES IN US:
1. It burns away what is false.
Masks. Performance. Hidden compromise. Secret sin.

2. It awakens what has gone dormant.
Prayer. Passion. Holiness. Awe. Hunger.

3. It empowers what God has called.
Boldness. Witness. Obedience. Endurance.

4. It makes our lives a source of light.
Not perfect people. But burning people. People who have been with Jesus, and it shows.

Closing:

Here’s the question for this week:
“What in my life needs the fire of God?”

Maybe for some, the answer is obvious:
-A temper that keeps flaring up.
-An offense you’ve nursed for months.
-Secret compromise no one knows about.
-A prayer life that has become dry and mechanical.
-A heart that still believes in Jesus but no longer burns for Him.
-A calling that has gone quiet under the weight of disappointment.

Maybe God's fire needs to burn something out of you. Or,
maybe the fire of God needs to burn something back into you.

Maybe it’s not about condemnation; it’s about ignition.

Fresh oil taught us that God fills us before He uses us.
Holy fire teaches us that what God fills, He intends to ignite
-So don't ask only for comfort. Ask for cleansing.
-Don’t ask only for power. Ask for purity.
-Don’t ask only for a touch. Ask for transformation.

Because the goal of the Holy Spirit is not simply to make you emotional.
-The goal of the Holy Spirit is to make you holy.
-And holiness is not cold religion.
-Holiness is what happens when the fire of God touches a life, and nothing stays the same.
