Sermon Title: Love over Freedom

vs. 1-18, Imagine you've earned the right to something. You've worked hard, you've sacrificed, and everyone agrees you deserve it.

Most people would naturally say, "Take what's yours." Paul says, "I could... but I don't have to."

vs. 19 - Paul is willing to give up his rights, to come as a servant, or slave, so that people can know Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior.

He is not subjecting himself to their rule or lordship.

He is selling out to the calling that Jesus has given him!

vs. 24 - The "race" is the lifelong pursuit of faithfully following Christ and advancing the gospel.

This is his way of saying: "If athletes are willing to discipline themselves for a temporary reward, shouldn't followers of Jesus be even more disciplined for an eternal one?"

vs. 25 - The Corinthians had watched athletes spend months training, denying themselves comfort, following strict routines, and focusing on one goal.

Paul is saying: "Look at those athletes. They give up good things for a fading crown. Christians should be willing to give up even legitimate rights for a prize that lasts forever."

What is the prize that Paul is speaking of?
The prize is not salvation.

The prize that we are running to win, includes:
● Christ's commendation for faithful service.
● The joy of finishing well.
● Eternal rewards for faithfulness.
● Seeing others come to know Christ because of your obedience.

vs. 27 - Paul's concern is not, "Will I get into heaven?" His concern is, "Will I finish my calling faithfully?"

The race is not about being faster than other Christians.

It's about running with endurance, purpose, and focus until the day Christ calls you home.

“Every believer is running a race. Those who finish well are those who willingly discipline themselves, lay aside anything that hinders them, and keep the gospel—not their personal rights—as the finish line.
