Matthew: The Authority of Jesus pt. 3

Matthew: The Authority of Jesus pt. 3

Matthew 9:1–17 may seem like three separate stories, but together they reveal a powerful picture of who Jesus is and how He invites us to respond. As we explore the healing of the paralyzed man, the calling of Matthew, and Jesus' teaching on fasting, we'll discover what these passages reveal about God and about ourselves. We'll also see that while questions often begin in our hearts and are shared with others, they ultimately find their answers when we bring them to Jesus.

Story Number Two: the calling of Matthew.
What does this story tell us about God?
1) He sees people
2) He calls people
3) He collects people.
Story number three: Jesus is questioned about Fasting.
What does this story tell us about God?
God has a bad habit of answering questions with a question.
Why does God seem to make a habit of asking us questions? Relationship
What does this story reveal about us?
Life comes with seasons.
- Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves, “Why does this fellow talk like that?
- When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
- Then John’s disciples came and asked him, “How is it that we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?”
Questions first appear in our hearts,
it is healthy to take them to friends,
but ultimately, we must take our questions to Jesus.
