https://thechapelfh.churchcenteronline.com/givingHeaven Q's
Is heaven a real physical place or a spiritual state?
Revelation 21:1–4 // John 14:2–3
Revelation 21:1–4
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, 'Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.'
John 14:2–3
In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.
Will it be boring?
Revelation 22:3–5 // Isaiah 65:21–22 // John 10:10
Revelation 22:3–5
No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him. They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.
Isaiah 65:21–22
They shall build houses and inhabit them; they shall plant vineyards and eat their fruit. They shall not build and another inhabit; they shall not plant and another eat; for like the days of a tree shall the days of my people be, and my chosen shall long enjoy the work of their hands.
John 10:10
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.
Will we eat, drink, and experience physical pleasure?
Luke 24:41–43 // Revelation 19:9 // Isaiah 25:6
Luke 24:41–43
And while they still disbelieved for joy and were marveling, he said to them, 'Have you anything here to eat?' They gave him a piece of broiled fish, and he took it and ate before them.
Revelation 19:9
And the angel said to me, 'Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.' And he said to me, 'These are the true words of God.'
Isaiah 25:6
On this mountain the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wine, of rich food full of marrow, of aged wine well refined.
Will there be work and creativity?
Genesis 1:28 // Revelation 22:3 // Isaiah 65:21–23
Genesis 1:28
And God blessed them. And God said to them, 'Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.'
Revelation 22:3
No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him.
Isaiah 65:23
They shall not labor in vain or bear children for calamity, for they shall be the offspring of the blessed of the Lord, and their descendants with them.
Will there be culture, art, and music?
Revelation 5:9 // Revelation 21:24–26
Revelation 5:9
And they sang a new song, saying, 'Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation.'
Revelation 21:24–26
By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it, and its gates will never be shut by day - and there will be no night there. They will bring into it the glory and the honor of the nations.
Will there be nature and beauty - things I love about this earth?
Isaiah 65:17–25 // Revelation 22:1–2
Isaiah 65:17–19, 25
For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth, and the former things shall not be remembered or come into mind. But be glad and rejoice forever in that which I create; for behold, I create Jerusalem to be a joy, and her people to be a gladness. I will rejoice in Jerusalem and be glad in my people; no more shall be heard in it the sound of weeping and the cry of distress... The wolf and the lamb shall graze together; the lion shall eat straw like the ox, and dust shall be the serpent's food. They shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain, says the Lord.
Revelation 22:1–2
Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.
What will my resurrection body be like?
1 Corinthians 15:42–44 // Philippians 3:20–21
1 Corinthians 15:42–44
So is it with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable; what is raised is imperishable. It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power. It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body.
Philippians 3:20–21
But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.
Will I be recognizable as me?
John 20:27 // Matthew 17:3–4 // Luke 24:39
John 20:27
Then he said to Thomas, 'Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.'
Matthew 17:3–4
And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. And Peter said to Jesus, 'Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.'
Luke 24:39
See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me, and see. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.
Will I still be me - my personality, memories, and identity?
1 Corinthians 13:12 // Revelation 2:17
1 Corinthians 13:12
For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.
Revelation 2:17
He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, with a new name written on the stone that no one knows except the one who receives it.
What about people with disabilities, illness, or disfigurement?
Isaiah 35:5–6 // Revelation 21:4
Isaiah 35:5–6
Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; then shall the lame man leap like a deer, and the tongue of the mute sing for joy. For waters break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert.
Revelation 21:4
He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.
Will I know and recognize the people I love?
Matthew 17:3–4 // 1 Thessalonians 4:13–18 // 1 Corinthians 13:12
1 Thessalonians 4:13–14, 17–18
But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep... Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. Therefore encourage one another with these words.
1 Corinthians 13:12
For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.
What about my marriage - will that relationship survive death?
Matthew 22:30 // Ephesians 5:31–32 // Revelation 19:7–9
Matthew 22:30
For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.
Ephesians 5:31–32
'Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.' This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church.
Revelation 19:7–9
Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready... And the angel said to me, 'Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.'
Note: Marriage as an institution ends - but love and relationship do not. Marriage points to the greater union between Christ and his people. What we have now is the shadow; what is coming is the reality.
Will my pets be there?
Isaiah 11:6–9 // Romans 8:21 (implied)
Isaiah 11:6–9
The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat, and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together; and a little child shall lead them. The cow and the bear shall graze; their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. The nursing child shall play over the hole of the cobra, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the adder's den. They shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.
Romans 8:21
...that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God.
Note: Scripture doesn't explicitly promise the resurrection of individual pets. It does promise the redemption of creation itself and the presence of animals in the new earth. This is a question to hold with pastoral honesty, not false certainty.
What about babies and children who died?
2 Samuel 12:23 // Matthew 18:10 (implied)
2 Samuel 12:23
But now he is dead. Why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he will not return to me.
Matthew 18:10
See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that in heaven their angels always see the face of my Father who is in heaven.
Note: David's confidence that he would go to his child - and the consistent scriptural theme that God's mercy exceeds our frameworks - grounds a pastoral hope here, even where explicit doctrine is limited.
Do I go straight to heaven when I die, or do I wait?
Luke 23:43 // 2 Corinthians 5:8 // Philippians 1:23
Luke 23:43
And he said to him, 'Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.'
2 Corinthians 5:8
Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord.
Philippians 1:23
I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better.
What is the difference between the present heaven and the new earth?
Revelation 6:9–11 // Revelation 21:1–3
Revelation 6:9–11
When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the witness they had borne. They cried out with a loud voice, 'O Sovereign Lord, holy and true, how long before you will judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?' Then they were each given a white robe and told to rest a little longer, until the number of their fellow servants and their brothers should be complete, who were to be killed as they themselves had been.
Revelation 21:1–3
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God... And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, 'Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man.'
Note: The present heaven is where believers go at death - conscious, with Christ, blessed. The new earth is the final state after resurrection. The present heaven is the waiting room; the new earth is the permanent home.
Is there a purgatory or a period of cleansing after death?
Hebrews 9:27 // Hebrews 10:14 // 1 John 1:7
Hebrews 9:27
And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment...
Hebrews 10:14
For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.
1 John 1:7
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
Is heaven only for Christians?
John 14:6 // Acts 4:12
John 14:6
Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'
Acts 4:12
And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.
What about people who never heard the Gospel?
Romans 2:14–16 // Acts 17:30 // Romans 3:25–26
Romans 2:14–16
For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus.
Acts 17:30
The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent.
Romans 3:25–26
...whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God's righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
Note: Scripture is clear that access is through Christ alone. How broadly his atoning work extends to those outside explicit Gospel proclamation is held in pastoral tension, not resolved with a formula. God will be both just and merciful. Our responsibility is the proclamation.
What about people who believed but lived badly?
1 Corinthians 3:12–15 // Romans 8:1
1 Corinthians 3:12–15
Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw - each one's work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. If anyone's work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire.
Romans 8:1
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
Will there be degrees of reward in heaven?
1 Corinthians 3:12–15 // 2 Corinthians 5:10 // Daniel 12:3
2 Corinthians 5:10
For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.
Daniel 12:3
And those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky above; and those who turn many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever.
Will God wipe away painful memories, or will I remember suffering?
Revelation 21:4 // Romans 8:18 // Isaiah 65:17
Revelation 21:4
He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.
Romans 8:18
For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.
Isaiah 65:17
For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth, and the former things shall not be remembered or come into mind.
Note: Scripture suggests not that memories are erased but that grief is finally resolved - transformed by the fullness of what is. The pain will not be gone from history, but it will be gone from the heart.
Will I be sad in heaven knowing people I love aren't there?
Revelation 21:4 // Isaiah 25:8
Revelation 21:4
He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.
Isaiah 25:8
He will swallow up death forever; and the Lord God will wipe away tears from all faces, and the reproach of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the Lord has spoken.
Note: This is one of the most honest tensions in eschatology. Scripture promises no more sorrow without fully explaining how. Pastoral humility here is more trustworthy than false certainty. The promise is real: God himself wipes the tears.
What if heaven still doesn't sound appealing to me?
1 Corinthians 2:9 // Ecclesiastes 3:11 // Romans 8:23
1 Corinthians 2:9
But, as it is written, 'What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him.'
Ecclesiastes 3:11
He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.
Romans 8:23
And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.
Note: The problem is almost always imagination, not faith. A small version of heaven is unappealing by design. The solution is a bigger, truer, more biblical picture - which is precisely what this series exists to give.
How do I grieve well when I actually believe this?
1 Thessalonians 4:13 // John 11:35 // Romans 12:15
1 Thessalonians 4:13
But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope.
John 11:35
Jesus wept.
Romans 12:15
Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.
Note: Paul says grieve differently, not grieve less. Jesus wept at the tomb of a man he was about to raise. Belief in resurrection does not eliminate grief - it reframes it. Tears and hope are not opposites.
Isn't this just wish fulfillment because you're afraid to die?
1 Corinthians 15:14–19 // Luke 24:36–43 // Acts 17:31
1 Corinthians 15:14–19
And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified about God that he raised Christ, whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied.
Luke 24:36-43
As they were saying these things, he himself stood in their midst. He said to them, “Peace to you! ” 37But they were startled and terrified and thought they were seeing a ghost. 38“Why are you troubled? ” he asked them. “And why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself! Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have.” 40Having said this, he showed them his hands and feet. 41But while they still were amazed and in disbelief because of their joy, he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat? ” 42So they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, 43 and he took it and ate in their presence.
Acts 17:31
...because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.
If heaven is perfect, why does anything I do now matter?
1 Corinthians 3:12–15 // 2 Corinthians 5:10 // Colossians 3:23–24
2 Corinthians 5:10
For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.
Colossians 3:23–24
Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.
Does believing in heaven make Christians stop caring about the world now?
Matthew 6:10 // Colossians 1:20 // 2 Peter 3:11–13
Matthew 6:10
Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Colossians 1:20
...and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.
2 Peter 3:11–13
Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn! But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.
Is the earth destroyed or renewed?
2 Peter 3:10–13 // Romans 8:20–21 // Matthew 19:28
Romans 8:20–21
For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God.
Matthew 19:28
Jesus said to them, 'Truly, I say to you, in the new world, when the Son of Man will sit on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.'
2 Peter 3:10–13
But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed. Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God... But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.
Note: The flood analogy is Peter's own - the world was 'destroyed' by water, yet Noah stepped onto the same earth, now cleansed. The fire of the last day functions as purification, not annihilation. The Greek word kainos (new) means new in quality, not new in origin - the same word Paul uses for the believer who is a 'new creation' in Christ.
What does 'no more sea' mean - do I lose things I love about earth?
Revelation 21:1 // Isaiah 57:20 // Revelation 13:1
Revelation 21:1
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.
Isaiah 57:20
But the wicked are like the tossing sea; for it cannot be quiet, and its waters toss up mire and dirt.
Revelation 13:1
And I saw a beast rising out of the sea...
Note: In biblical apocalyptic literature, the sea consistently represents chaos, evil, danger, and the source of opposition to God. 'No more sea' is not the removal of oceans - it is the end of everything that threatens, destabilizes, and destroys. What you love about creation will be there. What has ever frightened or harmed you will not.
Where is heaven right now - is it a place?
2 Corinthians 12:2–4 // Revelation 6:9 // Luke 23:43
2 Corinthians 12:2–4
I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven - whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows. And I know that this man was caught up into paradise - whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows - and he heard things that cannot be told, which man may not utter.
Revelation 6:9
When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the witness they had borne.
Luke 23:43
And he said to him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”
What is the New Jerusalem - a literal city or a symbol?
Revelation 21:10–27 // Hebrews 11:10 // Hebrews 12:22
Revelation 21:10–11, 15–16
And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great, high mountain, and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God, having the glory of God, its radiance like a most rare jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal... And the one who spoke with me had a measuring rod of gold to measure the city and its gates and walls. The city lies foursquare; its length the same as its width. And he measured the city with his rod, 12,000 stadia. Its length and width and height are equal.
Hebrews 11:10
For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God.
Hebrews 12:22
But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering.
Note: The city is described with specific measurements and architecture - characteristics of a real place. The symbolism (gates, walls, dimensions reflecting the Holy of Holies) does not cancel the physicality. Both are true simultaneously, which is characteristic of apocalyptic literature.
