Message Description:
Many Christians struggle with one of two extremes when it comes to the Bible: panic or pride.

This week in Theology for the Rest of Us, we’ll explore a practical message about these common struggles. Some of us feel overwhelmed by Scripture—confused by difficult passages, challenging teachings, or stories that seem impossible to understand. Others can become overconfident, believing we’ve mastered the Bible and have nothing left to learn.

Through examples from Scripture, we’ll discover how God calls us to a better path—one marked by humility, curiosity, courage, and a Christ-centered perspective. We’ll learn why character matters more than knowledge, how to navigate difficult questions without fear, and how to continue growing in wisdom without falling into pride.

If you’ve ever felt intimidated by the Bible, frustrated by unanswered questions, or tempted to think you’ve already figured it all out, this message will help you approach God’s Word with confidence, humility, and a heart ready to learn.

Key words: Bible, Theology, Disciple Making, The Way, New Believer
Today we are dealing with two opposite problems that believers fall into with the Bible.
1. Sometimes we panic when we read the Bible.
2. Sometimes we find pride in ourselves when we read the Bible.
Your character counts more than your ability or status!
PANIC:
1. I don’t understand the bible!
2. Does God in the Old Testament look different than Jesus?
3. The Bible has a different morality than what I've been taught.
4. Some of the stories in the Bible feel a little far-fetched.
PRIDE:
Paul's identity was in Christ, not his heritage or accomplishments.
Wisdom starts with wonder!
Between Panic and Pride is where we find success. It’s the Gospel, Christ centered lives, and biblically rooted faith.
Talk it Over

1. Two Extremes, One Bible
The message described two unhealthy approaches to Scripture: panic and pride.
- Which extreme are you more likely to struggle with, and why?
- How have you seen either panic or pride affect your relationship with God's Word?

2. The Noble Character of the Bereans
The Bereans eagerly received God's Word while carefully examining the Scriptures for themselves.
- What stands out to you about the Bereans' approach?
- How can we develop both eagerness and discernment when studying the Bible?

3. When the Bible Feels Overwhelming
Many believers encounter passages that are difficult to understand or accept.
- What is a Bible passage, doctrine, or story that has challenged you in the past?
- How do you typically respond when you encounter something in Scripture that doesn't immediately make sense?

4. Questions Are Not the Enemy
The message emphasized that asking questions is a healthy part of spiritual growth.
- Were questions welcomed or discouraged in your spiritual background?
- How can honest questions actually strengthen faith rather than weaken it?

5. Seeing the Father Through Jesus
Jesus said, "Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father."
- How does looking at Jesus help you understand difficult parts of Scripture?
- What aspect of Jesus' character most helps you trust God's heart?

6. Conforming to God's Image
The message asked whether we are conforming God to our image or conforming ourselves to His.
- Where do you see culture influencing the way people interpret Scripture today?
- Are there areas where God may be challenging your assumptions about what is right, good, or true?

7. Confidence in God, Not Ourselves
Paul had impressive credentials but counted them as loss compared to knowing Christ.
- What are some ways Christians can place confidence in knowledge, experience, or spiritual accomplishments?
- How do we balance growing in knowledge while remaining humble?

8. The Danger of Being "Right"
The message mentioned debates over theology, Bible translations, spiritual gifts, and other issues.
- Why do secondary theological issues sometimes create so much division among believers?
- How can we hold strong convictions without becoming prideful or judgmental?

9. Staying Curious Before God
James teaches us to ask God for wisdom, and wisdom begins with humility and curiosity.
- When was the last time God taught you something new through Scripture?
- What practices help you remain teachable and open to growth?

10. Between Panic and Pride
Joshua was instructed to meditate on God's Word and carefully obey it.
- What does a healthy, balanced approach to the Bible look like for you?
- What is one step you can take this week to approach Scripture with greater confidence, humility, and faith?
