The Things of the Flesh Bring Death
Paul contrasts death and life continually in this discussion of sanctification in Romans 6-8
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 6:23
And this commandment, which was to result in life, proved to result in death for me
Romans 7:10
The death and life that Paul is talking about here is primarily spiritual death and life
Therefore what benefit were you then deriving from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the outcome of those things is death. But now having been freed from sin and enslaved to God, you derive your benefit, resulting in sanctification, and the outcome, eternal life.
Romans 6:21-22
"This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.
John 17:3
Sin for a believer blocks our fellowship with Jesus
This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth
1 John 1:5,6
If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1 John 1:8-9
My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous
1 John 2:1
Sin at its core is rebellion and hostility towards God
Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
Galatians 5:19
Sin does more than merely destroy our relationship with our Father, it also destroys our life
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy
John 10:10a
The Things of the Spirit Bring Life and Peace
Contrasted to the things of the flesh are the things of the Spirit – and the Spirit is good!
The Spirit brings life - a deep relationship with Jesus
Then the LORD passed by in front of him and proclaimed, "The LORD, the LORD God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in lovingkindness and truth; who keeps lovingkindness for thousands, who forgives iniquity, transgression and sin…
Exodus 34:6-7a
The Holy Spirit literally resides within us, He will never leave us
In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God's own possession, to the praise of His glory.
Ephesians 1:13-14
"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go."

And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:7
Set Your Mind on the Things of the Spirit
This is the choice that believers have – what are we going to set our minds on
Even so consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus.
Romans 6:11
Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts
Romans 6:12
And do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.
Romans 6:13
This is not a one-time choice, but it is a daily, moment by moment choice – where am I going to set my mind?
Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth.
Colossians 3:2
When we set our mind on the things of the Spirit, the Spirit becomes our thrust and lift to allow us to live in righteousness
But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh.
Galatians 5:16
We walk according to the Spirit by focusing our mind on Jesus
Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.
Romans 12:1
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.
Romans 12:2
