"Triage is essentially a system of prioritization. It is often used in medical contexts. For instance, if you are a doctor on the battlefield, you cannot treat every wounded soldier simultaneously, so you must develop a process to determine which injuries you treat first.”

Gavin Ortlund
“…doctrines have different kinds of importance. Some hills are worth dying on. Others are not.”

Gavin Ortlund
4 Basic Categories of Theological Triage

1. First-rank doctrines are essential to the gospel itself. Example: Trinity

2. Second-rank doctrines are urgent for the health and practice of the church such that they frequently cause Christians to separate at the level of local church, denomination, and/or ministry. Example: Baptism

3. Third-rank doctrines are important to Christian theology, but not enough to justify separation or division among Christians. Example: End time views

4. Fourth-rank doctrines are unimportant to our gospel witness and ministry collaboration. Example: Musical instrumentation
“…I’m trying to get at the whole way we go about theology, in both forming our convictions and then navigating life and ministry in light of them.”

Gavin Ortlund
"One reason first-rank doctrines are worth fighting for is that their denial weakens the authoritative, corrective role that God’s word is supposed to have over us.”

Gavin Ortlund
“One of the most painful sources of division in the body of Christ, from the Protestant Reformation to the present day, has concerned the proper subjects of the sacrament (or ordinance) of baptism … Historically, Christians have not only divided from one another over this issue – they have killed one another … All told, there were probably more Anabaptist martyrs in the sixteenth century than Christian martyrs in the first three centuries of the church, prior to the conversion of Constantine. Let that sink in: more Christians were killed by each other over baptism during the Reformation than were killed by the Roman Empire over their faith in Christ.”

Gavin Ortlund
“This pastor observed that this difference – the presence or absence of humility – was generally far more significant than the actual issue at hand for determining a peaceful and fruitful outcome.”

Gavin Ortlund
Key Theme:
As the Corinthian church navigated the topic of food sacrificed to idols, Paul reminds them there is one God, one Father, one Savior they are united under and to use that as the premise for how to maintain unity despite having differing views on whether to eat meat or not.

Key Application:
Use the knowledge you have in Christ to build up one another rather than be puffed up, and to never be a stumbling block to your brother or sister in Christ.

Key Verses:
1 Corinthians 8:1 – “Now about food sacrificed to idols: We know that “we all have knowledge.” Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up.”

Key Questions:
1. What are some areas/topics you would consider yourself either weak or strong in?

2. What are some topics in our day that often can be divisive amongst Christians?

3. What are ways we as Christians can seek unity & humility while holding to our personal convictions?

Give Online

Church family, we praise God for how faithfully in so many respects you give. Our church family is undeniably generous, but we still have great needs for supplication. We ask that you give joyfully, faithfully and sacrificially in response to how our great God and Savior has given to us.
