Reflection Questions:
1. Can you remember when you were first exposed to the concept of the return of Christ? How did you respond to it?
2. Read 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18.
3. Reread vs 13. What is it about worldviews like atheism, humanism, evolutionary theory, or existentialism that would make them “hopeless” when it comes to the loss of a loved one?
4. Reread vs 14. Paul says that our expectation about the return of Jesus is based off of the resurrection of Jesus? How and why is that significant?
5. Reread vs 15-16. What is the sequence that Paul discusses in the passage?
6. What is the signal that Paul discusses in the passage?
7. How noticeable do you think all of this will be based on the passage?
8. Reread vs 17. On Sunday, we discussed the meaning of the “caught up”. What did we say about that? Consider other uses of this same word in the NT: John 6:15, 10:12, Acts 8:39, Jude 23.
9. According to Paul, what will happen to those who have faith in Jesus and are alive when he returns?
10. Who will we be with when Jesus catches up the living and resurrects the dead in Christ?
11. When it comes to the return of Christ, what details does this passage leave us to wonder about?
12. When it comes to the return of Christ, what details do we know for sure from this passage?
13. Reread vs 18. How can the details that we know for sure help comfort us and those around us in the face of the death of a loved one?
