Focus Verse. Have someone read 2 Timothy 3:12.
Read that verse again and answer this question:
How many people will be persecuted for wanting to live a godly life in Christ Jesus?
How many people will be persecuted for wanting to live a godly life in Christ Jesus?
** Icebreaker - What's your favorite thing to do at the beach? **
In our focus verse, it says that everyone who wants to live a godly life will be persecuted. How are you being persecuted?
Sean talked about three areas where we try to find happiness. Let's discuss.
The first area where we seek happiness is earthly treasures. Have someone read Matthew 6:19-21.
** 1. If someone looked at how you spend your time and your money, what would they say is most important to you? **
2. Are you comfortable with that, or do you need to change your priorities?
2. Are you comfortable with that, or do you need to change your priorities?
The second area where we seek happiness is daily pleasures. Have someone read Ecclesiastes 2:10-11.
3. What is something you buy, something you eat or something you do that you can't get enough of or you find yourself craving?
4. Can you say the same thing about spending time with God? In other words, can you say that you can't get enough of spending time with God, and that you crave spending time with God?
4. Can you say the same thing about spending time with God? In other words, can you say that you can't get enough of spending time with God, and that you crave spending time with God?
The third area where we seek happiness is worldly measures. Have someone read 1 John 2:15-17.
5. Where are you measuring yourself against the world or other people? For example - in your job, in your income, in your talents/abilities, in the number of friends or followers you have, etc.
6. If you were sitting next to God and He heard you say that, what would He say to you?
6. If you were sitting next to God and He heard you say that, what would He say to you?
Prayer 4U - Have everyone put their name in a hat, then take turns picking a name to pray for this week. Pray that your person would recognize the areas in his/her life where they are seeking happiness in things other than God.
Guided Prayer - (Leader, include the following in your prayer time). Father, in our minds, we know that You are our true source of contentment, yet we try to satisfy our desire to be happy with everything else but You. Reset our minds to focus on Your presence as our greatest treasure. Give us all a daily craving for You and the holy lives that You've called us to. And let us find our true satisfaction in being Your sons and daughters. In Jesus' name, Amen.
