THE CRISIS IN EGYPT

* Scripture: Genesis 12:1-3, Exodus 1:1-14
* In Genesis, God promised Abraham that his descendants would become a great nation.
* In the opening of Exodus, the nation is growing, but they are enslaved in Egypt.
* Pharaoh attempts to "de-create" God's blessing through fear and oppression.
* Pharaoh's decree: Kill all the Hebrew baby boys, but let the girls live because he believes they pose no threat.
* The stage is set for a contest of power: God vs. Pharaoh.

THE UNEXPECTED RESISTANCE

* Scripture: Exodus 1:15-22
* Pharaoh is a man of immense power, yet he remains nameless in the text.
* The Hebrew midwives, Shiphrah and Puah, are given names and honor.
* The midwives perform what is possibly the first recorded act of civil disobedience because they feared God more than Pharaoh.

* Scripture: Exodus 2:1-4
* Moses' mother (Jochebed) hides him for three months, defying the king's order.
* Moses' sister (Miriam) stands watch at the river to ensure his safety.

* Scripture: Exodus 2:5-10
* Pharaoh's daughter (the Princess) and her slave girl reach into the chaos waters to save the child.
* The very thing meant to be a tomb—the Nile—becomes a womb for the future deliverer.

THE WAY GOD WORKS

* Scripture: 1 Corinthians 1:26-29
* God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise and the weak things to shame the strong.
* Religion is often accused of oppressing women, but the God of Exodus works through the vulnerable and the forgotten.
* This is the same God who chose women to be the first witnesses of the resurrection of Jesus.
* Contrast: Moses tries to save Israel through his own strength and violence (Exodus 2:11-15) and he fails.
* It is only when Moses is old and weak that God will finally use him to lead.

THE SEVENTH WOMAN

* Scripture: Exodus 2:15-22, Exodus 4:24-26
* Moses flees to Midian and meets the seven daughters of the priest of Midian.
* He marries the seventh woman of our story: Zipporah.
* Moses returns to Egypt but neglects the covenant sign of circumcision.
* Zipporah acts as a priestess, performing the ritual and saving Moses' life from divine judgment.
* Before Moses ever said "Let my people go," seven women made his life and mission possible: Shiphrah, Puah, Jochebed, Miriam, the Princess, the Slave Girl, and Zipporah.

A NEW CREATION

* Genesis begins with 7 days of creation where God brings order out of chaos.
* Exodus begins with 7 women through whom God "re-creates" and rescues His people.
* Pharaoh acts as a "serpent" trying to return the world to darkness.
* God uses the "life-work" of women to answer the "death-work" of the king.

* Biblical parallels:
* Fruitful and multiply: Exodus 1:7 reflects Genesis 1:28.
* Seeing the Good: Jochebed sees that Moses is "tov" (good), mirroring God’s assessment of creation in Genesis 1.
* The Ark: The basket Moses is placed in is a "tebah," the same word used for Noah's Ark.

SUMMARY AND APPLICATION

* God erases boundaries: Hebrews, Egyptians, and Midianites all worked together to preserve life.
* The order of God's world is maintained by acts of mercy and resistance, not by the edicts of kings.
* A midwife's "No" to Pharaoh was a "Yes" to the Creator.
* If you feel invisible or powerless, remember that God works through those the world counts as "being at the bottom."
* The greatest rescue mission in human history was made possible by two midwives, a young girl, a princess, a slave, a mother, and a woman with a sharp stone in the desert.
